If there was any fear that the Lakers had turned the corner and were back on the road to respectville, this squelched that fear.

I think the NBA is becoming a global game (look at the draft class this year and how much hype it gets in Olympics). With NBA being the premier league, players are starting to become paid like soccer players, where these salaries are not uncommon.

There are a lot of advertising dollars in the NBA though. And I don't think fat lazy americans are going to be watching less TV anytime soon. If the market for the nba does tank, player salaries would just go back down. But they'd still be making 10000x as much as they'd get if they had a real job.

Am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with this?

16 mil is the new normal salary for a starting quality C. This is a guy who is one year removed from starting and playing really well in the NBA finals.

Well, the cap went up 25%, so subtract 25% to put it in perspective of what you're used to seeing over the past few years. That would be 12 mil....seems high to me for a fairly average center.

Pekovic made that kind of money. Omer Asik got a 5 yr, 60 mil contract last year, etc etc.

This isn't too egregious. If Timo can start 65 games and put up 12/8, he's worth 16 mil in the current landscape. LA still needs to hit that salary floor anyway, so they had to pay someone.

Yeah, and those teams really want to be rid of their contracts.
