I'm not certain why the Lakers had to cut him but he was on a minimum salary contract last season so perhaps his salary had a raise for this coming season which would mean it counts against the salary cap for the actual salary due to be paid. Normally minimum contracts only count against the cap for the amount of a rookie so teams don't have an incentive to sign younger minimum salaries players over older veteran minimum salary players. The minimum salary is higher for players with additional years of experience. If the Lakers had to cut Kendall to save cap space my guess is we wouldn't be able to claim his salary as a minimum contract off waivers. If somehow we can claim him off waivers I'd rather have him than any of Crabbe, Clavier, Meyers though. But since those salaries are guaranteed I don't know if Paul Allen wants to waste a million bucks for a player not on the roster. We might be able to use one of those players as trade bait and avoid paying the remainder of the contract.
Its odd to me so many Blazers fans don't want to give up on Meyers since he was a 2012 lottery pick but multiple teams have already given up on Kendall Marshall who was a 2012 lottery pick.
Can't believe everything you read on internet but this guy tweets this: Mark Deeks: Kendall Marshall can be claimed off waivers by anyone. And should be by someone. To claim someone off waivers, you need cap space or a suitable exception. Marshall was on a 2 year min deal, so the main exception suffices.
Marshall may have been over-rated on draft night, but he has shown he can contribute *something* to an NBA team. I wouldn't pay him like a lotto pick and I wouldn't hand him a starting job - but for minimum wage he is worth a bench slot. You could make the same argument about TRob vs Leonard.
But we would have to waive crabbe or some player in order to make bid to get Marshall. But if some other team also does, chances are they will have a worse record and hence get Marshall, leaving the Blazers with paying a cut player who may still develop and an empty roster spot to fill.
I mean I'm not against cutting crabbe for Marshall, but I donth think its a slam dunk. I still have a little hope crabbe can figure out how to do in games what everyone says he does in practice, dime shots to perfection.
Haven't we been over this? We don't have to cut Crabbe, do we? You can have over 15 on the roster in the Summer, right? You just have to get down to 15 by some time in October.
and the quest to compile the entire 2012 lottery continues...Andre Drummond! Michael Kidd-Gilchrist! Come on down!
I'm all for this. We wouldn't have to cut Crabbe either. I'm sure we could get a team to take him for free. No longer would we have to pay his salary and we get to sign Kendall. He would give us a different look in the second unit, something I've been wanting with a Ramon Sessions type. A guy who can facilitate the second unit and put them in a position to succeed. I've seen him take over games with his passing alone. We're going to need another point guard anyways in case Blake gets hurt. This guy is better though.
This has got to be the most agreement I've ever seen on S2 about anything. How do you spell "kumbaya"?
Unfortunately there are probably at least 10-15 other teams who agree as well......with worse records than us, who also need an extra PG.
Correct, we don't have to get the roster down to 15 players until the end of the preseason in October. Would make training camp and preseason more interesting as someone's getting voted off the island.
Am I right in saying that it's first come first served when claiming off waivers? So it's who gets to the phone first?
