It doesn't matter if he cares or not, when has he ever cared? Lamar is Lamar. He's no different than what he was last year, the year before that, the year before that, or his rookie season. He is who he is.

My issue all along has never been Lamar. If we still had the MLE to use, I would've waved goodbye to LO weeks ago. I'm not comfortable at all with JP being our first big off the bench. Look at the east. The Cavs have Shaq/AV/Big Z and possibly Joe Smith. Boston has KG/Perkins/Sheed and Orlando has Dwight/Lewis/Bass/Gortat. Our front court depth, and depth in general is shit if LO leaves and if we don't find a suitable replacement. I doubt someone who signs with us for the vets min is going to make that big of a difference. I don't think someone like Shelden Williams is a big upgrade over JP at all. They're decent, as 3rd strings. But you look around the league and look at all the other contenders out there, every single one of them have depth and a good three way big man rotation, except for us (if LO leaves). There's no guarantee Shelden comes here either. If we offer him the vet min, he'll get a salary below 1 million, all it takes is one team to offer more than that and he's gone. The Lakers other supposed option, Drew Gooden, just signed with Dallas for 4.5 million, so vets min won't give us anything as far as I'm concerned.

The Lakers aren't above and beyond all the other contenders in the league, they weren't last year either. It took a couple of lucky bounces for us to prevent the Finals from going to Game 7, so it's not like we were absolutely dominating all competition. Teams around us have drastically improved this year, so if we end up losing LO, Mitch better be on the phones 24/7 to find a decent replacement.

As for Drew, I like him, but once again, he has proven nothing to me. Hopefully he finally stays healthy and steps up next year, because we'll definitely need him for more than a couple of weeks, with or without LO.

Of course it matters if he cares. I know he can be aloof majority of the time, but he did play hard in the post season during crucial moments and stepped up despite a bad back. He agreed to play off the bench despite being a starter his entire career. He showed more care last season and some signs of maturity.

My main concern is Odom signing with us and not playing hard like he displayed the first couple of seasons in LA. Or worse he becomes a locker room cancer complaining about PT and what not.

He's created a real distraction this offseason for the team instead of re-signing and staying loyal to a franchise who's given him several chances.

If Lamar wants to return and build on his success in the post season I'd be thrilled, but if he's going to accept less money than he thinks he's worth and just comeback because we offered him more than anyone else and becomes a toxic contract I'd prefer to let him leave. If Miami thinks Odom can succeed as a #2 option alongside Wade they are in for a major disappointment.

Shelden Williams doesn't need to be a major upgrade. He just needs to play a solid 10 to 15 minutes a night and not hurt the team when he's on the court.

As Lamar Odom continues to mull his future, still hopeful that an improved offer for the Los Angeles Lakers is forthcoming, Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade is trying as hard as he can to convince Odom to end his free-agent wait.

Wade announced via his Twitter account late Sunday night that he has flown to Los Angeles to "bring Odom bac (sic)" to the Heat. That was Wade's follow-up to an earlier weekend tweet in which he implored Odom to "come back to where it started for the both of us."

Although it's unclear how much impact Wade's ongoing recruiting efforts will have on his former teammate -- or if Heat president Pat Riley, who's also in L.A. this week, will be meeting face-to-face with Odom -- one source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com that a resolution to the monthlong Odom saga is likely "in the next few days."

Odom's options, as of Monday, were choosing between an offer from the Lakers that has been reduced from its high point two weeks ago or taking one of the multiple fallback proposals from the Heat that are thought to be sufficiently attractive to coax him to Miami.

So eager to reunite Odom and Wade after their one successful season together in 2003-04, Miami has offered Odom as much as it can for a team well over the salary cap: $34 million over five years with an opt-out to return to free agency after the fourth season. Sources said that Odom, if he ultimately decides to return to South Beach, would likely sign the five-year deal or opt for a four-year deal that comes with a provision to return to free agency after three years.

One team source confirmed Monday that Lakers owner Jerry Buss, after pulling his initial offer off the table on July 14, is now offering "less" than the original three-year, $27 million deal that he withdrew when Odom pushed for a fourth year. Another source maintains that Odom's preference remains returning to the Lakers after helping them win a championship in June but cautioned that he is prepared to return to Miami and reunite with Wade and Riley if nothing changes this week.

Sources with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com that an informal level of contact between the sides was maintained after Buss pulled his offer, but it appears that they remain far apart in negotiations. Wade, meanwhile, continues to turn up the volume on his public pleas for Odom to stop haggling with the Lakers, after announcing two weeks back that the Heat "want him back home."

Wade and Odom played together for only one season before the latter was packaged with Caron Butler and Brian Grant in the deal that brought Shaquille O'Neal to Miami in the summer of 2004. The Heat, with Wade as a rookie, finished 42-40 that season and won a round in the playoffs despite an 0-7 start.

Odom, who turns 30 in November, has made it clear over the past several months that he has no desire to leave the Lakers. The possibility exists that Buss has simply decided that he is no longer amenable to absorbing the luxury-tax implications of bringing him back, but it would be an undeniable blow for the Lakers to report to training camp in October without Odom and Trevor Ariza after their contributions to the 15th championship in franchise history.

If Odom does join the Heat, Riley is also expected to make a harder push to trade for Utah's Carlos Boozer -- to flank Wade with two top forwards in an attempt to convince Wade to commit his long-term future to the Heat -- while the new champs would be forced to depend on Andrew Bynum and the newly acquired Ron Artest to minimize the impact of Odom's departure.

Although he initially chafed at his move to the bench last fall, Odom ultimately flourished as a sixth man last season. In spite of a back injury suffered in the second round against Houston, Odom averaged 12.3 points, 9.1 rebounds and 32 minutes per game during the playoffs, when he frequently wound up teaming with Pau Gasol in the Lakers' frontcourt with Bynum either struggling or plagued by foul trouble.

Replacing Ariza with the more physical Artest this offseason gives the Lakers someone more capable of absorbing some of Odom's minutes and responsibilities. But Odom's exit would undoubtedly be celebrated by other playoff contenders in the West, since it's the luxury of having three long-limbed big men to surround Kobe Bryant -- Odom, Gasol and Bynum -- that makes L.A. so fearsome. Odom also ranks as one of Artest's closest friends in the game, so his continued presence would theoretically help Lakers coach Phil Jackson and Bryant manage the mercurial Artest.

The Lakers went into the offseason hoping to convince Bryant to sign a contract extension after resolving the futures of Ariza and Odom, with Bryant possessing the option again next June to joining the free-agent class of 2010 if he chooses. On a promotional tour in Asia last week, Bryant said he was "optimistic that he'll be back."

"He makes a much, much stronger team," Bryant said of Odom.

In 10 NBA seasons, Odom has averaged 15.1 points and 8.8 rebounds. He made $14.1 million last season to complete the six-year, $63 million contract he received from Miami in the summer of 2003.

"Lamar already knows how I feel," Wade said recently. "It's a very important decision in his life. It could be about where he ends his career."

Reports are popping up all over the place today that not only is Lamar Odom favoring signing back with the Heat, but that a decision on the matter will be coming "in the next few days", according to a source 'with knowledge of the talks' (told to ESPN). The options for Odom to mull over aren't as attractive as they were a couple weeks ago. The Lakers have since reduced their offer of 3-years $27 million, while the Heat still have a couple different contract options lined up for Odom, all of which are quite reasonable and lucrative.

Another source maintains that Odom's preference remains returning to the Lakers after helping them win a championship in June but cautioned that he is prepared to return to Miami and reunite with Wade and Riley if nothing changes this week.

Another twist to the story was sent out via Twitter, thanks to Dwyane Wade. He has been getting more and more into petitioning to bring Odom home, thanks to his new favorite online communication tool. Last night he sent out a tweet saying:

"I'm in LA to bring odom bac to miami with me lol lol lol. LA fans dnt get mad at me.."

This is pretty cool...that our superstar would go to these lengths to bring Odom to the Heat. Now, its coming out more that Wade and Odom are close, so the question is...would Dwyane be making this same effort for an equally talented player that he wasn't already friends with? Just something to consider...

What makes Wade being in L.A. even more interesting is that Pat Riley is also in the City of Angels this week, but it is unknown if there is any meeting set up between he and Odom. I imagine Riley is ready to pounce on Lamar as soon as he is 'done' with the Lakers. We'll see how Jerry Buss plays it; if he's been lowballing Odom, now is when we'll find out.

In any event, I will keep you posted as soon as I hear anything.

A source with knowledge of the talks believes that an end to Lamar Odom's free agency saga is nearing.

As of Monday, Odom was considering a significantly reduced offer from the Lakers or one of multiple proposals from the Heat.

Miami is reportedly eager to sign Odom, and has offered him as much as a team that is well over the salary cap can: $34 million over five years with an opt-out clause after the fourth season.

One source claims that even though the Lakers have lowered their initial three-year, $27 million offer, Odom would prefer to remain to Los Angeles.

Both Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade have publicly stated how much they'll like to have Odom as a teammate.

I know Riley was in town, and I know he was looking to meet with Odom.

If LO leaves we better be shopping AMMO/Farmar around. I wouldn't mind Shelden as a short term option, but by the trade deadline, Mitch better be working the phones. 7 million expiring contracts for 2010 is no joke. We can get something good if we want it.

LO is a prideful, emotional guy. He probably doesn't feel too happy that he had to basically get on his knees and crawl over to Jerry to make up, only to receive a contract less than the original offer. Furthermore, Lakers are unwilling to commit to him beyond a third year, which basically hints to him that he is only wanted two or three years. I don't know if he's mentioned this or not, but it's pretty obviously IMO that job security is very important to him. Jerry's getting pissed of at him and throwing him a lower offer whereas Pat Riley and D. Wade fly all the way over from Miami to greet him and try to lure him back. Financially, he it obviously makes more sense to take Jerry's offer, but I think there's more to it. He's heavily debating between the two options otherwise he would've already signed. With Riley and Wade flying over to greet him, and Jerry using the "take it or leave it" approach, I won't be at all surprised if he goes to Miami. They certainly make him feel a lot more welcome and appreciated. 5 years, 35 million isn't terrible money either.

I'm sure Mitch isn't really negotiating the terms, so I think LO wouldn't hold that against him either. Financially it makes sense to hold out this long and say I'm leaning here and there, just to draw the offer up. If he wanted the MLE he would have done it already in my eyes.

I've said all along Mitch has had very impact on these negotiations. It's basically Jerry vs LO's camp. Jerry's pretty much telling LO "take it or leave it," whereas Riley and Wade are going out of their way to help lure LO back to Miami. If I'm looking for job security, it's a no brainer. I'm a Heat. I believe LO wants to return to LA, but not at the price Jerry has offered. Personally, I think he waited all this time to see if Jerry would increase the offer, and obviously that's not happening, so it's time to make a decision. If Jerry puts the original offer back on the table, I'm pretty sure LO would accept, but that hasn't happened. My gut tells me he's going back to Miami, but hopefully I'm wrong.
