A point guard can always call their own number, and unless they completely lack the shooting skills, they should when the team is down and the other players aren't getting the job done (see the CHA game). Maybe a more streaky NBA as a whole means more scoring opportunities for PG's.

Well the PGs in the 90's were of the same mold. Isiah, Porter, AI, Marbury, Francis, and so many other top tier PGs were scoring PGs as well.

It is sort of chicken and the egg. Does the running game thrive because of RG3 completing 65% of his passes as well.as running for 700 yards ir vice versa? For me, alot of those interceptions have been on Luck and would be.the reason I would vote RG3.

I think it's a direct result of the no hand checking rules. This give quick guys with good handles a tremendous advantage. Guard them to close, they'll blow by you and penetrate. Back off to prevent the penetration and they'll rain threes on you. BTW, Damian Lillard is perfectly suited to today's NBA. He has the quickness and handles to blow by defenders and he has a great quick release on his three. Back off him one step, for even a second and he unleashes a quick 3-bomb.

And, the quickest players with the best handles tend to be PGs.

The defensive restrictions actually started in the early 90s to try to generate a more free flowing, higher scoring game. Here's a great article that explains the new rules and when they went into effect.

Thanks for the find and it was a great read. Personally I love the new style of play. I think the games are much more fun to watch. But the advantage is seriously way heavy on the offensive player. And sometimes I love watching a good defensive team play swarming defense like it once was. It's good for the league; but at the cost of the purity of the game, IMO.

Re: Lillard - Rookie of the Month? (unconfirmed)

This was backlash to the Pat Riley thug ball he popularized when coaching the Knicks (kind of the anti-Showtime). That really was UGLY to watch.

If they are going to open it up, I'd like to see them open it up equally for all players. You can't so much as lay a hand on a perimeter player, but you can still practically maul a big man under the basket? A foul should be a foul should be a foul no matter when it happens, where it happens and who it happens to!

Lillard got it, per MB and Rice quoting the NBA release.

Sort of a foregone conclusion, but still nice to have it confirmed. Given all the historical milestones Lillard has met, it has to be one of the best-ever rookie first months? It looks like he's also within two games of tying Rudy's rookie record for most consecutive games to start the year with a made 3-pointer.

Lillards having a better rookie year than both Roy and Aldridge had.

Riley was a reaction to Chuck Daly's dirty play. The other 80s NBA currents were the 70s Wooden style (embodied in the 80s Celtics and Lakers) and the European style, which you described in that last sentence. The NBA and Europe have tried to become similar since then.

That is a great article. It shows how hard he had to work to get into the NBA. That will evolve into the NBA as well. Now his goals are ROY, then All star, then WCF, then Finals, then championship. We may not get there; but I know he will work damn hard to try to get there.
