    NBA players can play pickup basketball whenever they want, that's in their contracts. This isn't pickup basketball; its an organized public event. The NBA is in their right to decide what events their employees should participate in.

    I understand your point....but I can't imagine a movie studio or record company getting upset that their "stars" are doing fan outreach.

    I don't think it's quite the same - a record company does not employ a musician. A studio employs an actor for a movie, or set of movies. I think a better analogy would be a member of a symphony, opera or ballet company, who could certainly play/sing/dance with friends informally but probably could not perform for pay outside the company without permission.

    Some get paid by their shoe companies. Dame going to the Philippines was part of his $10mill a year shoe contract with Adidas. "If you want the full $10mill a year you have to do this, this and this."

    These players went there to make money for themselves, not do fan outreach for the league.

    As I understand it, most record studio contracts nowadays stipulate that the record companies get a cut of just about everything "their" artists do for profit, including appearances, memorabilia, and even including appearing in movies. Record company deals may be the closest thing there is to servitude in the country.

    Signing a contract is not slavery. Before you sign the contract you have the option not to. No one forced anyone to sign an nba contract, if you and/or agent/lawyer decided the money was worth following the contract thats on you to fulfill it.

    Point is if they dont like the contract they are probably more than welcome to give the money back on principle and play in the phillipines all they want.

    How is this even an issue? What would stop the players from a barnstorming tour of Asia to sold-out arenas, if not for the CBA? The players gave up their rights to play for pay outside of the NBA when they signed the 2011 CBA. Remember when LaMarcus Aldridge had the 'all star' game at U of Portland? That was because the players were locked out, and weren't under contract. The players are free to barnstorm wherever if they negotiate it into the 2017 opt-out clause, but their employers may be against that idea, since it's not 1925 anymore.
