How about all the sob stories that Canzano does that have no business being in the sports section? He's the problem, not the solution.
I really like Kerry as well. He has done his fair share of the fluff articles as well. When the Blazers do their various media campaigns, I like to get reactions to Canzan, Dwight Jaynes, and Eggers because I think that they are the most fair.
Jaynes used to be great but then he went to the Canzano school of journalism and learned that you get more attention and page views from trolling than accurate reporting.
Nah, when Jaynes was the editor of the Portland Tribune he was still pretty damn good. Then he got fired and was asking for work on his blog. It's when he teamed up with Chad in the morning where he honed his grumpy old man act.
I have zero problems with Canzano writing about a Bill Johnson and his medical condition, or writing about a soldier who died in Afghanistan, or about his experience of coaching a 4th grade womens vollyball team who had a player with Downs syndrome, or a following a young girl who eventually died from a long term illness. I like his perspective on life and as both a sports fan and a nurse, I think more people need to be exposed to those types of stories. How does a guy like this get bashed? It just doesn't make any sense to me. Most people don't remember Steve Duin who was a troll back well before the internet was ever invented and the city was so upset that that they (The Oregonian) moved him over to the Metro or life section of the paper. He was a troll.
Yes, he wasn't bad. His books were pretty good too, "The Long, Hot Winter" with former Blazer coach Rick Adelman and "Against the World" with former Oregonian sports writer Kerry Eggers.
They could retire the jersey's for every single player that ever played for the played for Portland and I could care less at this point because it is bloated. It just doesn't have the same meaning any more. It's a feel good gesture. I get feeling good when I see the production on the court win ball games. That's all I care about. Just win baby.....
When you are a Season Ticket Holder (STH) you have an account manager and periodically they send you email and other communications where they only give you positive bullet points. Of those bullet points, maybe 25% were actually true or obtainable and they were called out by some members of the media as being untruthful or more wishful thinking.
Those stories are great..... in the living section. He always starts those stories by essentially saying, "you all take sports so seriously, but look at this person who is dying of _________." I don't want to see that shit in the sports section. Like there isn't enough bad shit on the news? Civil war in Ukraine. Protests in Venezuela. NSA shitting on the constitution and bill of rights. Soldiers dying in Afghanistan. Do I REALLY need to hear about this shit in the one section of the paper that should be dedicated to anything BUT the problems in society right now. He's a tool. He capitalizes on the suffering of others. He wins awards for those ridiculous articles. Don't pretend like the guy cares. I've met him many times. He's a self-indulgent, megalomaniac who thinks his opinion matters more than the sports he's covering.
You understand why your ticket rep wouldn't send you something criticizing the team while asking you to renew your tickets for next year, right?
I don't want to cross that line where I am being a Canzano homer because I'm not but he is good at what he does. Canzano has won numerous Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) awards. In 2010, the Society of Professional Journalists named Canzano the National Sports Columnist of the Year for his work the prior year. In 2009, Canzano was voted America's No. 1 sports columnist by the APSE, for 2008. In 2007 and 2008, the Associated Press named Canzano the nation's No. 2 sports columnist among large-circulation newspapers, with Canzano finishing second to the Los Angeles Times’ Bill Plaschke both times. Canzano was recognized by The Press Club of Atlantic City as national sportswriter of the year in 2004. In 2013, Canzano won first place in Special Topic Column Writing in the Best of the West contest for his portfolio of columns that included a column on a soldier who died in action in Afghanistan and Canzano's own experience coaching a girls fourth-grade volleyball team with a player who has Down Syndrome. In 2002, Canzano was named the nation's top investigative sports writer by the Associated Press News Executives Council[10] for his enterprise piece on Carlos Rodriguez, a 21-year-old Dominican basketball star who was masquerading as a 17-year-old high school basketball player. Canzano is a three-time Oregon Sportswriter of the Year winner. On July 7, 2007, the Portland Beavers' Triple-A baseball team held "John Canzano Bobblehead Night."Also, on Aug. 29, 2009, the LPGA Safeway Classic featured "John Canzano Bobblehead Day," as part of the tour event held at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Oregon. I understand that many blazer fans hate Canzano because the blazers hate Canzano but he does do good work.
Yes but these fluff articles were insulting to the intelligence of the fans when you knew that the team was going to suck for next year.
I remember when the organization was more fair and balanced and it sold in this market. I love your sarcasm though.
