Re: Lord help us You might call it not having to spend a ton of money for months leading up to this debate. Or keeping one's powder dry.

Re: Lord help us Without a doubt, Perry has followers and I think Colbert is trying to help his viewers brace for Perry. With that said, didn't Perry at one point say basically "I don't know what to do, we should turn to god for assistance." If that is really how he feels, gtfo of politics! I want my government to do things, if I wanted a religious state I'd move to Iran.
Re: Lord help us Lots of people turn to religion for guidance. I'm not one of them, but I don't dismiss those who do. Humility isn't a bad trait, at least that's what I've been told by my inferiors.
Re: Lord help us I'd be okay with Perry if he would stay away from social issues. It would be too hard to vote for him if he were to be a social conservative activist. Also, I'm fine with him being religious. I just think he needs to keep it out of his politics. And for the love of God, if he embraces Bush's foreign policy then he will lose way too many votes. If he were to... stay away from social issues (leave it up to the states), stay true to limiting gov't, not spending, and creating jobs, and then in favor of drawing down and getting troops out of the middle east... I think the guy has a great chance. If he runs to close to what Bush was, he will get raped in any general election. The American people still blame Bush more than Obama for the economy, and the wars are still extremely unpopular. I will wait and see. I'm very unhappy with Obama, but the Republicans seem like they are going to fuck everything up and give Obama another term.
Re: Lord help us I think the line Perry and other social conservatives are trying to draw is to lean heavily on the 10th Amendment. Meaning they'll say they disagree with a particular policy, but it's not in their purview; it's a state issue. In essence, they'll try to have it both ways.
Re: Lord help us Except that he's already blown that strategy by being in favor of a federal anti-gay marriage amendment, and a federal anti-abortion amendment. barfo
Re: Lord help us Perhaps some people think god gives them guidance, but my understanding on his statement was "I think we have to let god solve our problems."
Re: Lord help us Anyone afraid to debate the weakass slate of candidates the rightwing has fielded for this election certainly could never find the balls to face down Nelson Oduber, let alone Hu Jintao or Kim Jong-il. Bristol Palin is more qualified to lead than he, and certainly more courageous.
Re: Lord help us Ron Paul would be interesting, although I disagree with his foreign policy. I'm non-interventionist for the most part but he lacks nuance and details. Foreign policy is more complex than domestic policy.
Re: Lord help us At Texas A&M, a sports school which is basically a 4-year version of a community college, he got no A's, 20 B's, 27 C's, 9 D's, and academic probation. Republicans lost one of their few candidates with normal intelligence when Pawlenty left.
