I think they're going for a Willy Wonka ending, one of the castaways takes Jacob's place and gets the Chocolate Factory/Island.

The smoke monster becomes a reformed Oompa Loompa.

I agree they could've shown that episode earlier. Hell, anytime in the past year or two would've been fine.

I've got a pretty good feeling the series won't just end with the finale. It's got too much of a fan base, and it's so easy to write in or out characters. Seems like they could make several films based on the series if they wanted.

Hell, you could make an entire movie about just the history of the Dharma initiative. Or how Jacob's mom got there. Or (assuming Jack winds up replacing jacob and the island doesn't blow up at some point) how Jack defends the island against some new plane crash or something.

They've milked three Bourne Identity movies out of the story of a spy with amnesia. There's a lot more to work with here.

I know the current team seems to want to call it done. But when potentially hundreds of millions of dollars could be made, Hollywood has a way of finding a way.

I still love the series and am in the middle of rewatching it with a lady friend... we're halfway through season 2 and it's fun picking up on all of the things I missed the first time around.

I don't buy for a second that there was no story arc. There have been a few "one off" episodes over the 6 seasons, but overall it's progressed and it's been good.

    Different, but good.

The last episode revealed a LOT:
-- Jacob killed Black Smoke Monster, his brother
    -- BSM is actually dead
-- There's a source of ... something ... that made BSM what he is

While I don't follow it outside of the show, I know that there is additional information out there to flesh out what's going on... viral videos that they've made to support the show, for example. See this:

    Interesting stuff.

That is a very good point. The first two season had my daughter and I jumping to websites after every episode to try and piece it together.

I still love the show, but it kind of seems like two shows - First half - an adventure show with the Dharma Initiative, and then - second half - a spiritual show with Jacob and MIB.

The producers have said that they have known what the last 10 minutes of the show would be since Day 1, and they have also said that there are major shifts in store in the last two episodes. So "astonishing surprise" here we come again!
