<div class="quote_poster">Quoting sportsrock37:</div><div class="quote_post">With Lebron and Gooden, you guys will be playoff contenders for many years to come, so I don't see the picks being high.</div> We'll have to see on that one. One way to look at it is Boozer for Gooden. Seems like Cleveland is making up for that loss, but not really better overall. Loosing the Bat is no big deals this is a great trade for Cleveland. Orlando continues to look like idiots. This is their second one sided trade against them this summer.
What was the other one sided deal? The Tmac deal wasn't one sided for us, we improved dramatically. Jameer's deal wasn't one sided.

Jameer's deal wasn't one sided.</div> Actually, that was the one I was thinking of. Francis is the most overrated player in the league. Houston will be better off without him. A top five (or minimum top ten) player like TMac should bring some star back in return. The draft was awesome for Orlando, of course. Jameer might be real good. Next year they will get to try again. IMHO
Its like the Ben Wallace thing over again... Only this time we didn't get a superstar in return and lost two more big men. Great Trade Weis! :bonk: BTW, in two years(if Hill dies or something), we are gonna have some money. Yao and Amare, I think, could be afordable...
Drew Gooden has unlimited potential, but is he going to use it in Cleveland? This could easily be a one-sided trade in the Magic's favor. Weisbrod takes risks. I don't care what anyone says about him. He is the savior of Orlando.

Just like someone mentioned earlier, this is his second lopsided trade against the magic.
Terrible.. Honestly.. I dont understand.. Drew Gooden got no time here, and its obvious we had to trade him right now to get something good...But what we traded, and got back was just plain stupid.. This really wasn't smart..
I have a little more faith in Weisbrod than most people here do. I think there is more to this trade, so I'll keep my mouth shut until I see some type of official confirmation.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">John Weisbrod Comments July 23, 2004 So Tony Battie? ?Obviously we?re still grinding trying to do everything we can to make the team better. Bigs have really become the priority because we feel like the backcourt is in pretty good shape, and this was a kid we targeted a while ago and made efforts to get a long time ago and just weren?t successful in doing it, and we were glad it finally came to pass. " What do you like so much about him? ?Probably as much as anything he is a super high character guy. Having talked to Jim O?Brien, who obviously had him in Boston, he just loved the kid, and said he was one of their key guys in holding that group together from a leadership standpoint. He can obviously play the four and play the five, and is a good defender and good shot-blocker, and will be a good type of person to play in Dwight?s shadow, helping him along with his development as far as like a veteran leadership presence.? How important is it to get high character guys around Dwight? ?I don?t think it is necessarily Dwight-related, I think just in general you want high character guys because it is conducive to winning. Certainly, being a young and impressionable kid, and sort of finding his way, it will certainly be to his benefit to have the type of people around him that we want to rub off on him.? Did Battie have injury problems last year? ?At various points he has had some knee injuries. Obviously we?ll just get a chance to have him and do the physical and all that kind of stuff now. All trades are contingent on those types of things, but we?ve been led to believe that he is back to full health and that there are no problems with that.? Were you worried about Drew?s ability to co-exist with Dwight? ?Well Drew obviously came back in the beginning of last year and found Juwan in his spot, and I think even Drew would say maybe he didn?t deal with that as well as he could of or should of. Drew is a talented kid, he is younger than Tony, and he has a lot of potential. I think he is a little bit more of a scorer than Tony, which from Cleveland?s standpoint, in losing Boozer, is probably where their interest came from. But we definitely feel that Battie is a better fit, more the type of person and player we are looking to accumulate.? Would you describe him as ?your type of guy?, a scrapper? ?Yeah, he is not an overly physical guy, but he is a real mentally tough guy. He has all the intangibles you want. We are at point now in the roster where we are dealing with spots 10-14 or 15, and you want to find the glue guys, the right kind of intangibles. Guys that might play an 18-28 minute roll, but will be the right type of people for the chemistry of the team, the dynamic of the team, and we definitely feel he is that kind of guy.? Are you trying to erase the memory of last year?s team by ridding of all those players? ?I don?t think we?re trying to erase the memory in terms of getting players out. Obviously the players we had assembled, and the team we had assembled, obviously wasn?t a very good one. So if you want to make the team better and get better, I guess it is a natural byproduct that you end up changing a lot of faces. Certainly we?re happy with everything that has happened so far this summer, we?re happy with this, and we have to keep moving to the next step.? Looking at the stats, it appears they got a better deal, so does it come down to things that aren?t on paper? ?I think it comes down to making your team better. Based on the roles different guys are going to play, what makes your team better is what matters. Certainly if Drew plays the scoring role they expect him to play, or hope he?ll play, he?ll make their team better. I know that Tony, compared to Drew, is better for our team, so ideally that is the way a trade works best is both teams get what they want out of it and I think that can happen with this deal. I guess the one sore spot is Anderson, and we didn?t need to put Anderson in it. Anderson was real intent on coming over and wanting to sign and play this year, and I didn?t want to hold him back from doing that and I wasn?t real comfortable with having two rookies at that position. If we kept Anderson and signed Anderson to that four spot, then you have Dwight and Varejao that are both sort of wide-eyed, new to the league and I didn?t feel great about that. When I look at the deal as a whole, Steven was put in mostly to make the numbers work, I believe they are going to waive Steven, I don?t believe he is necessarily part of their plan. Varejao is the piece that probably twinges to have to move at this time, because we drafted him because we liked him. All in all we felt better going with the experience next to Dwight rather than putting two rookies at the same spot.?</div> I'm not mad at Weisbrod, I think he is trying to put a team together that will compete every night and not be lazy. I'm a little sad because I thought this trade might lead to another one. but I guess not for now. At least we won't be in last place as far as defense goes.
I'm not surprised. I figured we wouldn't get equal value for Gooden after Weisbrod said he wouldn't part with Mobley or Cato. That pretty much ended the J-Rich rumors. At least we got the veteran big man we desperately needed. Gave up too damn much though. BTW- Enough with the "we got raped" comments. Comparing a basketball trade to rape is absurd and tasteless. Just on of my pet peeves. Especially coming from a woman.
Well, it's official then. After reading Weisbrod's comments, things make a little more sense. Varejo just wasn't going to work out on this team, in fact, I don't think that we should have ever drafted him, so I am not going to get upset about that. Hunter is useless and was there for the reason that I originally thought, to make the numbers match up (salary-wise). So in essence, it was Gooden for Battie and two 2nd rounders. Not bad, but not great. I think that we really needed another solid backup big man and we got that.
I still feel we got ripped off on this deal. Hunter is a 7'1" center who could have been used to body up people like shaquille oneal now that he is in the east. Then gooden was a very talented player we could have used at the 5 to back up cato. Battie is a very good vertern, but I feel we could have gotten more for gooden than just battie. O well what can I do about it we got a good vertern in the trade all we can do now is look to the future.
Steven Hunter is going to be waived. Maybe we should sign him. I do agree about the bodying up thing. Cato and Battie and Declercq? Hunter would've been better than Declercq though.
If you've ever truly watched Hunter play (especially live and in person), you'd know that he just couldn't grasp the sets... especially on defense. He was great in College, but for some reason has no attention span for rotations in the NBA. Too bad... his size and natural athleticism could've made him a good player. Instead, I see the Cavs waiving him too. Hopefully Battie will come through as they're projecting, because like nearly everyone else in here, I really liked Gooden.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting XOver:</div><div class="quote_post">If you've ever truly watched Hunter play (especially live and in person), you'd know that he just couldn't grasp the sets... especially on defense. Somehow I get the impression that most of the people on these boards that say that letting Hunter go after this season was a mistake haven't watched many Magic games. If you had, you would realize that we gave this guy a couple years to improve and he never did. He knew full well that this past season was his year to prove himself and have a breakout year to justify the Magic signing him to another contract. Did he do that? No, he didn't. Yes, the guy is 7' tall even and has a good frame too, and hell, I'll even go as far as to say that the guy is athletic. But he's lacking the proper mental mindset to play basketball in this league. I have never seen any player ever in my 12 years of watching professional basketball take himself out of a play simply because he isn't paying attention to what's going on. If he's such as "asset" as many people on this board suggest, why haven't any of the other teams in the NBA thought about picking him up by now? He's worthless and is lucky to be in the NBA at all.
its too bad we didnt get a jrich trade done... it looks like the magic were shopping gooden, and i dont know if this is the best trade that was available. battie is a nice player, but doesnt score much, and doesnt run. gooden does/could do everything battie does better. the second round picks arent worth anything, but i dont know about the other magic players involved. this must mean the staff wants howard to start, which may be good, he can develop quicker. battie will be a good veteran to help lead the team and teach howard. we'll just have to see how this turns out.
Noooo.... This is the first stupid trade Orlando does in this off-season I'm a Gooden fan, and I wish him the best, but I also wished he could be the best in Orlando... The Magic are gonna regret this one for sure... And Battie??? No way!! I trust more in Cato to be our starting C...

I still think we got the worse deal here. Basically it has been Mike Miller, Anderson Varejo, Steven Hunter for Tony Battie and 2 2nds. (I say this since Stevenson likely won't stay)
I still don't like the deal, but it's a lot better than I orginally thought. Battie is an underrated defender, and he was a huge factor for the Celtics a while back. Obviously, he's not as talented as Gooden on the offensive end, but now we look a hell of a lot better on the defensive end. Drew Gooden was a hot/cold player throughout the season. Most Magic fans loved him, but he never stayed consistant. Now that Dwight Howard is our PF of the future, lets face it - It's best for Gooden to leave. With him out, we now have a stronger frontcourt defensively, and Battie could help mentor Howard along. Steven Hunter has never proven himself. Like explosive and XOver said - If you really watched him play, he had absolutely no attention span for his sets, rotations, etc. He was great for a couple of blocks and boards, but don't forget about all the defenders he let pass by. I wish Drew Gooden the best of luck, hopefully now he can blossom into a great player without having to worry about other PFs.
