I guess I'm the only one that does not really like this trade from the Bucks standpoint. Yeah, I know: Magloire is a good center; good centers are hard to come by, but Desmond Mason, and a first rounder is way too much for Jamaal Magloire, in my opinion. Let's start off with Desmond Mason who was I believe one of the team captains. Mason is a very good leader and a very good spark off the bench. He was also one of the team's best defenders, if not, the best defender on the Bucks. With Michael Redd being a huge defensive liability, Mason could of help patch up their defense on the perimeter. I’m not so sure how Simmons is defensively, but I don’t think he is near the defender Mason was. His presence as a sixth man will be missed. Currently, there is no one on the roster that can create as much havoc off the bench as Mason. Also, what will this do to Andrew Bogut, the first overall pick in the 2005 draft? The Bucks obviously made a heavy investment on him. If I had a #1 pick on me who was NBA ready, I would try to give him as many minutes as possible, and with Magloire logging around 30 minutes a game, how can he get valuable playing time. Let’s also not forget Ervin Johnson, Joe Smith, and Dan Gadzuric all deserve playing time, too. I know Bogut could shift over to the four, but it wouldn’t be the same playing his natural position. The 2006 first round pick is what I still don’t understand. The pick better be lottery protected because if it isn’t, this move might be very costly. The Bucks are looking very good on paper, but still aren’t guaranteed to make the playoffs. If injuries hit the Bucks hard like it did last year, not only will they most likely miss the playoffs, but they’ll also be without a pick to help them the next season. Magloire’s 8.5 million dollar contract is expiring after this season, so they save more money, but overall I do not like this move for the Bucks. Hurting the development of a young center, and giving away their first rounder is something I think will hurt them in the long run.
^ The pick is not lottery protected. Milwaukee gave up a little too much IMO. Looks pretty even for both teams, but we will see eventually.
Both Magloire and Bogut are interchangeably at PF and C.. they are both capable of playing both. For Bogut's sake, I'd say keep him at center to make him develop into a strong player. Magloire can bang down low against any PF in the league. Only player who would stop him is Duncan. And he ain't as strong as Magloire.
I didnt know Jamaal Magloire's contract expired after this season. In that case its good, they bring in a mentor for Bogut who's been an all-star and is consistent to learn from, and if he performs well and/or can handle a reduced role while he's aging they could resign him or the could let him walk or they could sign and trade. This is making more sense to me now but the only thing I dont get is what are they going to do with Ervin Johnson and Joe Smith?
I agree that i think they gave up a lot and they don't necessarily need him. The bucks just drafted a #1 center, spent a bunch of money on gadzuric and now traded for an previous all-star, i know big men are hard to come by but did they really need all three of those guys, it's lot invested in one position. I also think magloire's contract doesn't end after this season, he has another one after that. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/milwaukee.htm
^Correct. Magloire and Mason have simliar Contracts. Magloire is under contract until the end of the following season.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting GotSkillz92:</div><div class="quote_post">LOL, you have a mason sig. And you like the trade. Weird. Anyways it really doesnt make sense to me. Magloire is a better player then Gadzuric and they invested alot of money on him to be a backup. Its also delaying the progress of Bogut. Of course he'll learn but this further delays his playing time. U guys also gave up a first rounder and money. Not to mention a good player in Mason who is becoming a star in the league. This is like a knick-type trade.</div> I made it before the trade and im still a huge mason fan Kind of Ironic though
trade magloire to Toronto=) nah jokes aside..i like this trade for u guys magloire should make you guys an automatic play-off team however his injuries should be a worry! and the re-signing of Gad seems a bit weird now..since you guys are packed with big mans.. i think magloire and bogut should also be a good fit together..bogut aldready compared himself and Jamaal to: David Robinson and Duncan eventhough i really liked Mason..i think its good that he got a fresh start without having to worry about minutes in New Orleans
This would be a good trade if you didn't already have 3 legit centers and your backcourt wasn't thin already. Magloire will not be able to guard quicker, perimeter pfs, and Welsch will be your backup sf...not good. I just don't really understand this trade. And you gave up a unprotected, pick which is not a good thing for a young, semi-rebuilding team.
I like this trade for Milwaukee...You can never have too many legitimate post big men, IMO...plus with Simmons seeing atleast 36-40+ minutes per game, there wasnt much room left for Mason...but I do think, now, the Bucks have a solid post rotation with Magloire, Smith, Gadzuric, and Bogut...however, ONE of them is expendable so I can only assume Smith is on the trading block...however, I believe this move propels the Bucks as favorites for one of the last two seeds in the East playoffs...Magloire/Simmons/Redd/Ford is a SOLID core, surrounded by role players like Bogut, Welsch, and Mo Williams...This move makes a whole lotta sense, IMO...
Apparently, Bogut will be the starting PF until Joe Smith gets back. So the Bucks will open the season with Bogut/Magloire on their frontline. Bogut will defend Chris Webber tonight, should be interesting to see how he handles an All-Star.
