I hate this logic. The perception of how strong or weak a class as a whole is is irrelevant if you're personnel evaluator is good at His job. I trust Schmitz to direct the FO to quality prospects, regardless of the caliber of their class peers. There are always surprises in every class.
Brogdan is really close to Chauncey and I could see him mentoring here for a couple of years and moving onto our coaching staffn if Chauncey keeps the job.
I agree with you, I just posed that as a possibility of reducing payroll, among other possibilities, if ownership made Cronin do it.
He can still play..couple years from now he's 32....Some would call that an older vet as they called Dame before his last birthday. He might play 5 more years..who knows? He seems to like teaching from what I heard in his interview. That usually leads to coaching.
He will be 32 and not very likely at all to want to enter the coaching realm barring major injury. You are making an implication that there will likely be either a resigning with the Blazers at some point or a gap where Brogdan leaves the Blazers to play with another team(s) until he retires and later comes back to join Chauncey's staff. That's the full implication and I put the odds at a low percentage.
Brogdon is a big and skilled guard who doesn't rely on athleticism. He could play until he's 40 if he can stay healthy.
From Jake Fischer: Sources said Houston has also eyed veteran guard Malcom Brodgon, who was traded recently to Portland in the Celtics’ acquisition of All-Star Jrue Holiday, although the Trail Blazers and Rockets have not held significant conversations. The Blazers have so far indicated they plan to keep Brogdon as part of their rebuild, and Brogdon himself recently refuted any notion he was looking for an exit from the franchise. https://sports.yahoo.com/kevin-porter-jr-trade-begins-week-of-final-roster-moves-210020418.html
I was thinking the same. It's not like we don't need him. Yes, Scoot needs to be given minutes to develop, but what happens if Scoot gets hurt? How do the other players develop without a decent PG?
If we want draft picks why not look to the Knicks? Fournier and the Knicks have plenty of draft picks.
Ten minutes with a heady vet on the court with you is worth twenty minutes of having to figure it out yourself
Don't you think they've already had that through training camp? If a good deal for Brogdon comes along I hope we take it, instead of worrying about mentoring... especially if that deal involves Brogdon going to Miami and Lowry (the better mentor until the trade deadline) coming back with a pick.
Billups also used to be a veteran basketball player. Who knows if he will be a great coach of a team, but he should be a great mentor to a point guard like Scoot.
I fucking agree, who the fuck cares what Malcolm brings back in the way of mentorship, just trade the dude for the best pieces that contribute to our rebuild.
Nah. Billups isn’t suiting up, he isn’t leading by example in game situations. Billups played in an era so unlike this one he might as well have played ice hockey. Brogdon should stay. The kids will benefit.
I’m not making the decisions of course; they don’t let me do that anymore. But I like what I’ve seen of Brogdon a lot. It’d be up to Scoot, Shae, and Chauncey to decide if Lowry is a better fit as a mentor.
I'm all for the Blazers getting some veterans on the roster to mentor all the young guys we have. It is important, and I don't like how the 6ers process groups lacked that. But it doesn't have to be starter/6th men level players in Brogdon/TimeLord. It can be 10th, 11th, 12th men in the rotation. If the Blazers can get good assets for any of Brogdon/TimeLord/etc they should do it. Either do it now, or do it later if you think the return may go up. Those guys can help teams win now and we don't care about winning now. We need to build talent and build assets so we have those means to win now once that day comes. We lacked those assets in the Lillard era and that led to never building a contender. Lets build the foundation now so that mistake is not repeated in the Scoot/Sharpe era. Either during a Brogdon/Timelord trade or as a subsequent move the Blazers should get a Lowry or Gordon Hayward or whatever veteran on an overpaid contract to come back and provide veteran leadership. Or cut Brown/etc and sign a vet minimum guy for that. There is a need for that role on this years team - but it doesn't specifically have to be Brogdon or Timelord - or Grant or Thybulle, etc.
