This is not really news; Manning's gender identity has been a back story all along. It is in fact very common for pre-transition transwomen to bury themselves in hyper-masculine environments - military, overwhelmingly male professions, and so on in an attempt to "make it go away". Whether she "betrayed her country" is a matter of opinion; some would say deliberate killing of civilians and covering it up betray American values. I guess it would be too much to ask to have a reasoned debate on the topic without sexual insult. The military does not cover gender reassignment treatment. Transpeople are not "mutilating" their bodies, they are making their bodies match who they actually are. It seems several here are hoping Manning gets raped in prison. How very Christ-like of you. It's like every tin-foil hat conspiracy is true; how can one not think 9/11 was accomplished with the consent of the people in charge here after reading the syllabus of the cables? I'll be honest (and this is to my shame); I didn't know what was in the cables until today.
I lean that way typically too, but for a moment there I thought a bit more on the "just keep that memo in my outbox for a while; nobody needs to see it yet" side of intentional laziness letting a predicted act occur. Not that the authoritarians were involved directly, but more than just a happy accident.
You should definitely listen to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast. He just did one on the Spanish American War recently. All I will say is that the role that Roosevelt and William Randolph Hearst played in the lead up to that conflict is pretty amazing.
