Maryland forward Robert Carter Jr. will forgo his final season of eligibility and declare for the NBA draft, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Carter is expected to sign with an agent, thus ending his short career in College Park.

Carter, a Thomasville, Ga., native who played his first two seasons at Georgia Tech before transferring to Maryland in the spring of 2014, polished his stock enough during his junior season to position himself for a possible jump to the professional ranks this spring. He is projected as a second-round pick by NBA Draft Express, which slots the junior at No. 51 overall to the Denver Nuggets. Only first-round picks are offered guaranteed NBA contracts.

But although Carter, 22, could have been a centerpiece of Maryland’s roster next season, he has been in school for four years and is on track to graduate this spring. His decision could also be influenced by the potential departure of all five starters from this past season’s team, which finished 27-9 and made the school’s first Sweet 16 appearance since 2003.
