trading a washed up player and two 2nd round picks for shawne williams really isn't a risk at all. neither is signing gerald green to a small deal. how exactly are those risks? they've invested almost nothing in the two guys and both have the potential for a big reward(though it's likely neither guy pans out). 2nd round picks can be bought every single year. trading them is nothing. and the other things you mentioned aren't risks either. signing diop to a big deal isn't risky, it's just simply overpaying a big man. he absolutely is a known quantity. they paid more than they should have for his services, but they didn't take a risk. similar thing with the kidd trade. it was a terrible trade and they mortgaged not only their future but their present as well. i guess you could call it a risk if you thought they were risking their future to make a run at the title last year, but anyone that thought the mavs with kidd were even going to be as good as they were with harris(much less better) was stupid to begin with.
