Terrific. I'm OK with him being token starter who plays 25 mpg. Just need some strong defenders behind him to play the forward spots.
I'm assuming the "this is where I want to retire" statement was followed with an implied "If they pay me enough to stay".
If he is willing to come off the bench if a younger player surpasses him, sure. Anthony and Collins isn't a bad PF duo
I see him as the perfect sixth man. He’s going to give you problems on defense if he’s starting, but as a scorer off the bench, yeah do it. Stotts has always had trouble generating offense with bench units so having Melo as a fallback option on every play would be great.
Kanter wanted to stay too. Aldridge wanted to stay. Lopez wanted to stay. Frye wanted to stay these are really easy words to say in January, but in July, the temperature is different. Once the discussions turn to money, things often change. What Melo wants from a next contract might not come close to what's best for Portland in a next contract. And of course, some other team can come into this and offer Melo an option Portland won't come close to matching, for various reasons that said, I'd think the Blazers have a decent chance here. They were the team that gave him a fair shot with Dame & CJ advocating for Melo. That has to count for something. But Portland will likely only have the MLE to offer so it could come down to who else is available and how much the Blazers would be willing to give to somebody who'd be a backup. If Portland isn't worried about being hard-capped, they could offer him the BAE (close to 4M IIRC?) and still have the full MLE
That's the most I personally would spend towards Melo. Portland needs to be very judicious spending their MLE money. Agreed. But LMA publicly stated that he did. As Wiz stated, comments made in January don't mean a whole lot.
Remember 29 other teams didn't come calling for Melo only the Blazers did so I figured that will be the case this summer.
Melo's stint in Houston stained him. His time here is washing that clean, and the rest of the league is seeing it.
One major difference is that Aldridge had been here already for many years where as Melo was sitting out a whole year before we picked him up and gave him a second chance. His career could have been over if not for the Blazers where as it was obvious Aldridge was a very desirable player for teams.
I’m good with giving him a 2 year 7 million deal, that’s about as high as I’d go. I’d like to retain him, seems he has settled with our locker room nicely (not really a surprise with our leadership).
I'd like to hope that seeing Melo's success here that it may encourage some other potential veterans to consider signing here in the future.
So what you are saying is Portland is the NBA's Rehab house that players go to get clean and rehabilitated before entering the real world again.
