That's not true. According to a lot of people around here, we just needed to make simple adjustments to shut Phoenix down.

Last year the haters were mad we had soft PF's and wanted us to upgrade with some toughness. Those people are hard to please!

We have such a player. His name is Greg Oden.

Portland fans do not like their bigs playing away from the basket. Uncle Cliffy, Sheed, LMA, Frye........makes no difference who the coach is, it is un acceptable.

But, but, ....EdO and many others have told us repeatedly that Channing Frye is not a good player.

    I'm so confused.

And his playoff numbers confirm that he's not playing well. It's cool that Barry feels that he is, but I'd sure like to see him justify that opinion.

Re: Jon Barry: Channing Frye "makes the Phoenix Suns unguardable"

Are you sure Barry's point wasn't that having Frye standing 24 feet from the basket with the threat to make a three shot makes Phoenix un-guardable because he helps spread the floor so much that it makes it hard to guard the "other players"?

I don't think Frye needs to have great stats to be effective for the Suns.

I would have taken ANY adjustments personally.

Which is ironic, because Frye is an undersized but effective center in Phoenix's system and has become somewhat of an enforcer. He was just a terrible fit for McMillan's disciplined style... I think Frye out-toughed Aldridge in the playoffs, so I would have to say the problem is the system not the personnel.

Re: Jon Barry: Channing Frye "makes the Phoenix Suns unguardable"

Jon Barry is the also the one who said Portland should trade the #1 Oden pick to Boston to get "veterans". Because we were too young, and LMA and Z-bo could handle the front line.

Maybe I'd listen to him if he was talking about how to live in the shadow of a dad and older brother better than he was. But dropping basketball knowledge? Dunno.
And I don't think it's a coincidence that Frye (after it was reported last year that he was the Blazers' best 3pt shooter in camp) shot a lot of 15-to-22-foot 2 pt shots, kind of like LMA does year in and year out. PHX gets him to take a step or two back behind the line, and all of a sudden 40-ish% goes from being inefficient and crappy to a huge help to a team. Who'd'a thunk?

Re: Jon Barry: Channing Frye "makes the Phoenix Suns unguardable"

If Aldridge went to the Suns he'd shoot many 3s just like Frye.

Once upon a time, McMillan allowed a long-shooting forward like Frye to dwell outside the paint. It was joked that the player went entire games without crossing the halfcourt line. McMillan allowed him to play this way 27 minutes per game for 4 seasons during 273 games. His name was Vladimir Radmanovic. He was traded to the Lakers, where an exasperated Phil Jackson called him a space cadet. McMillan has become spoiled by the player talent Paul Allen's generosity provides here and has become less flexible than in his Sonic days.

Just more evidence in support of that old adage that Tall lanky bench players who can shoot 3 pointers is what wins championships.

Also, anyone notice that our "basketball" discussions always involve 95% passive-aggressive indictments of other posters on this board, 3% basketball, and 2% pselling errors?

Seriously, we're not a basketball board so much as an out of control Jewish Mother's convention.

Ha, good show. I guess my point is that let's see how well the Suns perform in the playoffs when their shot isn't falling. Defense is far more consistent than hot shooting. I like Frye, but I am not that upset that the Blazers decided to go another direction.

Radmanovic was at or above his career average PER every year under Nate. He was consistently under 12 playing for Phil Jackson. Nate knew how to make Radmanovic a servicable NBA player; Phil Jackson couldn't, because he relies on superstars to carry him to success, and the superstars make finding niche players an easier task. I'll add that Radmanovic was traded first to the Clippers, and that the Lakers signed him as a free agent after that season.

Oden with, perhaps Sergio, for Vets? Pierce with Rondo thrown in as filler?

    That year, our team is:

    PG Blake/Rondo/Jack
    SG Roy/Webster/Wafer
    SF Pierce/Outlaw/Jones
    PF Randolph/Aldridge
    C Przybilla/Aldridge

That team would've competed for championships while the Celtics would still be a lottery team.

Oh, and BlazerCaravan- you're hilarious. You observation about the make up of this board made me laugh out loud.

See, that's what we need. A GM with a time-ravelling DeLorean. He'd make all the best hindsight trades, and we would be unstoppable...
