....I'm sure most have heard of it but the calendar hasn't changed, nor the western tradition. Nobody says "Happy National Day of Mourning" In the end, being thankful for a good harvest and sharing a meal with family or friends is what it comes down to in modern age..
It started out as religious. It was thanks to God for providing enough for winter. My family treats it as religious, but I do agree with you that for plenty of Americans there is nothing particularly religious about it.
I lack the energy and ambition to read most of the board, but sometimes I rise to the occasion to do my duty and read a thread. Fortunately in my old age, I have acquired the artistic and economic skills to find the gems. I thought, "It's about Magnifier! I'll pick this one. I'll learn a lot."
Here's what I heard from the AP on Friday, November 25: "Ruth Bader Ginsburg returns to court after hospital stay" https://apnews.com/RuthBaderGinsburg If you've got something newer, let's have it. Hey, I hope this isn't bad news for you.
We used to have an attorney. I first learned of him when I was just out of the Army and he would visit my parents. He was a well known attorney whose father was once the DA of Portland. He did have an alcohol problem which annoyed the hell out of me since I don't have a lot of use for alcoholics although I'm working on trying to understand their plight and all the myriad of problems that can lead to alcoholism. So, about ten or twenty years ago, I learned that he left Portland and went to Arizona where he got a job as a Walmart greeter. Talk about falling from great heights. Oh, he passed away several years ago. I attibute his passing to a combination of alcoholism and advanced age. The moral to the story? For some of you who hit the bottle a little too hard, there's always a job at Walmart as a greeter.
The Taliban was always ready to participate in peace negotiations. They were ready when Trump canceled the last peace negotiations. This business about thanking Trump for "continually leading by inspirational example" is sheer genius. Your sense of humor has been sadly unrecognized in here. Kudos, my sides were splitting with laughter.
Actually, the holiday was first proclaimed by President Lincoln as non denominational. It's an American holiday.
You are in a wheelchair. Of all the cruel people who ridicule Wal-Mart greeters, you should be last in line. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/walmart-panned-for-move-to-eliminate-greeters/ https://woub.org/2019/02/26/walmart-is-eliminating-greeters-workers-with-disabilities-feel-targeted/ https://indianapublicmedia.org/news...ving-fewer-positions-for-disabled-workers.php I binged "Wal-Mart greeters eliminated" and found many articles. Those are just the 3 I clicked. And instead of advocating in other threads, U.S. military action in South America to kill people, educate yourself.
This doesn't necessarily mean Wal-Mart is a jerkish company. I mean, how many other retailers are actively employing disabled veterans? I certainly don't see a lot of those out there. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/bu...sabled-employees-are-not-walmart-says-n978431
That's just the official holiday. I'm sure the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving was not on the fourth Thursday in November.
Get off your high horse. My post was not so much about Walmart and it's greeters as it was about John McCourt and his alcohol problem. The tie to Walmart's greeters was meant to be facetious. And what the hell does my being disabled have to do with Wallmart anyhow? No, don't answer that, just find someone else to pester.
Yes, Wal-Mart should be praised for employing poor old guys as greeters. They are the best thing in the store, other than the cheap bargains. One time because my hair was long, a greeter picked me out to check my receipt as I walked out. I didn't mind. Where I live they run around the entrance, not in wheelchairs, giving directions and checking restrooms for teenagers. I'm a Costco man myself, and haven't been in a Wal-Mart for about 3 years. Lanny should be ashamed of picking on wheelchaired Wal-Mart greeters.
