First off, I hate Carlesimo's guts, from his Blazers coaching days. Rubs me the wrong way. I was delighted when Sprewell tried to strangle him. Sprewell has been a favorite of mine ever since.

Second: Yeah, I can't stand PJ's voice. There is no way I could watch a Blazers broadcast if I had to listen to that guy.

Third: Paul Allen hand picked PJ to coach the Blazers. He's probably still in love with the guy. So there's that.

"It’s been a couple days but the fallout from the dismissal of 3 of the 4 broadcast personalities still seems like a very fresh wound. It seems many fans are more irritated with HOW it happened than that it happened at all. If felt like there was a like of personal touch and that it was delivered in a very cold and corporate way and maybe that is just what the NBA has become. It still didn’t feel very Portland. One sport cities have a different relationship with their team….just ask Green Bay."

We need to get off the "Portland is different" mindset. That worked in 1980's and 90's, but this is 2016.

One reason why "Portland is different" is a bad idea is that it stays in a provincial mindset.

Circle is complete. Blazers hire Calabro. It explains the release/replacing of Barrett.

"That was a great play! What do you think 'Sheed?"
"That's what I call cutting the check. But don't forget, both teams played hard."

Curious....Does anyone know if there is a list out there that shows announcing tenure? I'm curious when the last time a broadcast team was fired, not due to age like Schonley

I'll give Calabro a chance, but I'm still very annoyed. The reason sports teams are in business is because of irrational fan loyalty. It's hard to by loyal to an organization that doesn't show loyalty itself. Tone and Rice were only OK, but Barrett was fantastic and is a native Oregonian to boot.

You also did note that that list wasn't based on independent objective analysis of their ability, but on the various fan bases' perception thereof.

This is something I haven't heard before, the Blazers were only one of 4 NBA teams that had a 2 man radio team. All the rest had only 1 radio broadcaster.

I had heard most were a 1-man show but I didn't know it was all but 4 teams....wow. Maybe Wheels doesn't get a new sidekick going forward at all.

I would say that we as fans need a 2nd person. It makes for a better, more informational and entertaining broadcast. If the switch from the Mikes to Calabro is being sold as it's better for the fans then the Blazers need to add a 2nd person to the radio broadcasts.

Calabro is better at radio, personally, but we will see

I think Calabro's stint on TV will be short; I bet he replaces Wheels on the radio after next season (maybe by simulcasting the TV audio over radio).

I really hope they don't combine broadcasts. Having a PBP guy describe plays to me on tv like he would on the radio would be clown town

I've wondered that here as well. I think he is very good on TV but brilliant on the radio. Maybe this is just part of the transition and when the new deal actually kicks in next year (even though it should be completed this summer) they will want their own TV personalities and Calabro slides into the radio slot.

I agree, in this case. Wheels swings wildly from one extreme to the other. When we are winning, it sound like he's so amped up he's about to have a heart attack. When we are losing, he sounds like he's broadcasting the end of life on earth. There's very little middle ground with him. Which is why we, as fans, need someone to bridge the gap between his extreme highs and lows.

Tone was a mellow dude, but it ALWAYS took him 3x as many words as needed to try to make a point. You always knew what he was trying to say before he got halfway through saying it. Which ofttimes led to him talking over live action, which is a big no no in radio broadcasting when you rely on the call 100% to know what's happening on the court. You can get away with that once in a while on TV, where the fans can see the action with their own two eyes, but not on radio.

Wheels can call the games just fine by himself, in terms of describing the action, but his extreme mood swings will make most game feel like a manic roller coaster ride. Give him someone calm, cool and professional to provide some facts, stats and insight to help smooth out his peaks and valleys.

That's literally how I watched Blazer games for more than a decade: Schonz on the radio, TV on mute. It's much better than it sounds on paper.

Rice was the absolute perfect partner for Wheels.

    Shame they broke that up.
