Back-and-Forth Affair Goes to Colo-Colo 4-3 in the End
    [IMG]
With Chilean giants Colo-Colo playing 11 of their regular starters from the outset, FC Edmonton and the 5,500 fans at Commonwealth Stadium on Sunday knew that the match was going to be a huge challenge for the young squad. The first few minutes of the game were played, for the most part, in the midfield with a few chances going to the Chileans but both were called back on the offside.

FC Edmonton had its first half-chance in the third minute when a cross was sent into the box, but it sailed high over the heads of the oncoming strikers and went for a goal kick.

FC New York Announces Pro Tryouts
    Scheduled for July 24 & 25
    [IMG]

FC New York Press Release – www.fcnewyorksoccer.com

GARDEN CITY, NY – 2011 USL First Division expansion franchise F.C. New York recently announced it will hold tryouts for its professional team at Hofstra University on Saturday, July 24 and Sunday, July 25.

Technical Director Don O’Riordan will supervise. O’Riordan is a former professional player in England and has also coached professionally in Ireland and assisted both the China and South African national teams.

The tryout is intended for post-collegiate players and athletes with professional playing experience.

“It has always been our belief that there is an abundance of talent right in our own backyard,” F.C. New York President Doug Petersen said. “This area is a great soccer area. It has gone without a professional soccer team for too long. L ocal players who have talent have had to go to Rochester or Harrisburg for a chance in the professional ranks.”

Portsmouth downs FC Edmonton in shootout
    [IMG]
Canada’s newest pro soccer club holds its own through regulation before being edged by English side

Nadir Ciftci scored a goal in regulation and the winner in penalty kicks as English side Portsmouth FC defeated FC Edmonton in 5-4 penalty kicks in exhibition soccer action Wednesday.

With the teams tied 1-1 after regulation, Portsmouth beat Edmonton goalkeeper Rein Baart on all five of its penalty attempts.

Edmonton scored on Portsmouth backup goalkeeper Liam O'Brien four times, with Antonio Raga missing his attempt.

It was the fourth game of a summer tune-up for newly formed FC Edmonton one year before it is set to join the North American Soccer League.

Edmonton defeated the Montreal Impact and Ottawa Fury, and lost 4-3 to top Chilean squad Colo-Colo earlier this summer.

Late Goal Decisive for Whitecaps FC in Montreal
    [IMG]

In the first game of five matches on the road, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (8W-3L-9D) defeated Canadian arch-rivals Montreal Impact (6W-8L-5D) 1-0 in the USSF D-2 Pro League on Wednesday evening.

Greg Janicki's late header gave the Whitecaps their second straight league victory at Montreal's Stade Saputo in less than a month. In a match that seemed destined to end in a goalless draw, Teitur Thordarson's side found a way in the dying stages to claim three valuable away points against their fellow NASL Conference foes.

USSF D2 Update; New Standards Set for League, Current and Future Owners

The much anticipated USSF D2 meeting on Monday took place in New York without much fanfare or negotiations according to sources involved with teams that participated. The meeting was in general amicable and US Soccer did allow discourse.

Those attending the meeting from the federation were Sunil Gulati, Dan Flynn, and Brian Remedi. Team owners attending were: Austin Aztex owner Phil Rawlins, Carolina Railhawks owner’s Bob Young and Selby Wellman and his son Brian, Crystal Palace Baltimore’s Pete Med, FC Edmonton owner Tom Faph, Miami FC/Traffic US president Aaron Davidson, Montreal Impact owner Joey Saputo, NSC Stars GM Kris Bjerkness, Rochester Rhinos owner Rob Clark, FC Tampa Bay majority owner Andrew Nestor and Vancouver Whitecaps president Greg Kerfoot and USL owner Rob Hoskins. Those not present were Jeff Cooper of AC St. Louis, representatives from Puerto Rico who were said to be frustrated and felt that they most likely will not meet the new USSF standards and the Portland Timbers who will be moving on to MLS next season. Vancouver and Montreal have been actively involved with these discussion because the Whitecaps and the Impact would like to discuss the possibility of keeping a team in the D2 league for developmental purposes. Atlanta’s Silverbacks Boris Jerkunica was not in attendance either which may be telling with his involvement with the league in the near future.

    USL Restructures Professional Division
USL PRO Featuring Top Quality Competition to Debut in 2011
    [IMG]

Designed to help ensure the long-term stability of professional soccer in North America, United Soccer Leagues announced the merger of its First and Second Divisions into a single league property for 2011 - USL PRO.

Team owners and league officials are meeting in Tampa, Florida today to lay the groundwork for the 2011 debut of USL PRO, which will be governed by team owners and present the highest level of competition in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean outside of Major League Soccer (MLS).

USL PRO is a national league featuring a regional competition model to build natural rivalries and reduce travel-related costs. The U.S. Soccer Federation-affiliated league benefits from the leadership of the dedicated and experienced professional staff at USL’s Tampa headquarters as well as the developmental support of USL’s proven and integrated system of leagues.

USL PRO will consist of as many as four geographic regions in 2011. Teams scheduled to compete in USL PRO in 2011 will be announced in the coming weeks.

    Re: USSF Division Two Soccer

Any word on what the NASL teams are doing?

Also, how are they going to be able to position themselves as the second tier of US Soccer if they're bringing up these teams and they need to go by the new conditions imposed by the USSF for second division clubs. Puerto Rico didn't think they'd be able to make it and they've been in the second tier of US Soccer since 2003 and finding some success.

    that's an assumption
maybe everybody in USL are going down to the third division leaving NASL in the second.

It actually says in the article it will be the highest division outside of MLS in the US, Canada, and the Caribbean.

I don't think Rochester, Tampa or Austin would go for a demotion. Tough for me to see them wanting to stick it out with USLPro as I think many of their USL2 clubs won't be able to make the grade for participation in a USSF approved second division.

    Re: USSF Division Two Soccer

I'm pulling for Rochester on this one.

In NASL news, San Antonio will be joining the league in 2012. San Antonio have a brief soccer history with NASL, having played in the 1975 and 1976 seasons before moving to Hawai'i. For the 1975 season, the Thunder featured Bobby Moore, then England's all-time cap leader and captain of the 1966 team that over-inflated all expectations for subsequent England teams. Lou Sagastume also featured for the '75 Thunder, before going on to serve as Air Force soccer coach for 27 seasons.

If they bring back this jersey with them, I'll be quite pleased. Or this logo:

And if the NASL can find investors to revive the Caribous of Colorado with this jersey, I'd be a very happy gentleman. That's real fringe kids.

Rochester have a bit of a mountain to climb. Puerto Rico has struggled, but they're good at home. I think its the weather and they play in a baseball stadium, which probably throws people off a bit.
