Im sure the Mariners won't want a Team in Portland encroaching on a % of their fan base. Im sure Root Sports won't be involved as they have the Mariners and other Seattle teams.

I'm so tired of that shit.

    Fuck off Seattle.

We should flip that back on em and say they can't have an NBA team.

How did the Sonics and Blazers do it? And now Timbers and Sounders?

It's actually better for both. The rivalries are awesome.

Good point. They would always be relevant to each other even if nobody else cared.

I get you're point...but Im sure if you asked the Mariners if they want another team down the road they'd say no because of a decent % of fan base would convert over to the Portland team. They've been building that base for many years, where the sounders/sonics along with blazers/timbers came into leagues close to one another. Plus Roots sports is owned by the Mariners & Warner bros.

That's small potatoes. Getting a team in Portland would bring out the people who refuse to support any Seattle team, and they would potentially get more ticket sales from people traveling up to Seattle to watch the rivalry.

No way that plays into it sir. Draw a 170 miles radius circle around Chicago and see how many teams fall into that. That isn’t a problem for the Midwest teams.

How dare you question a Mariners fan's dedication?! We waited 21 years for the playoffs. Ride or die!

More baseball is more baseball. Neither the MLB nor the city of Seattle are opposed to that.

Agree, but consider how long those teams have been around and the population/households represents media market is much larger. Also, if Portland gets a will they want to use roots sports that is owned by the Mariners or sign with someone else? Media rights/markets matter.
Sure there will always be fans of the mariners as long as Portland doesn't have a team like the sea chickens.

If it comes down to SLC or Portland, Portland has no chance. The politics and business are more aligned for a new sports franchise in SLC than in Portland. Portland city leaders have more pressing issues to focus on than a professional sports franchise. I don’t think bringing a MLB franchise to Portland is on their priority list. Portland has rising crime rates, homelessness and businesses leaving the city in droves.

Short-sighted choice. SLC will soon be a toxic mess once the lake dries up.

I get it....but if Portland had a team since the mariners you'd probably be devoted to one.
Heck, I couldn't stand the Sonics, its was always the battle in Seattle. And if Portland is lucky enough to get a team after a number of years that rivalry would be vicious as well. Unless we are National league then you could support them both, if you wish.

Agree and after a number of years the rivalry would be the same as the Sonics/blazers-Timbers/Sounders.

During my working days I spent a ton time in the Seattle area listening to Softy, Calabro and the sports babe, arrogantly dissing on little old Portland, along with asshole husky fans. If you guys thing Seattle fans are rooting for us to get a team, let alone and AL team, that a big stretch, rivalry or no rivalry.

I'm a different story all together. I've got 4 brothers and we were each assigned an MLB team at birth.
    • Oldest - Cubs
    • 2nd - Red Sox
    • Me - Mariners
    • 4th - Marlins
    • 5th - Rangers

That being said, I would absolutely buy some sort of multi game package for a Portland team. Maybe even go in on season tickets with a family member or group.

Chicago is 80 some miles from Milwaukee and 180(ish) miles to Indianapolis.

The difference is, what areas to the teams consider their territory. Seattle considers Portland their "territory" when it comes to TV broadcast rights (etc).

Milwaukee and Chicago don't consider each other their own market in that regard.

It's really going to suck when SLC gets a team and PDX is left with nothing. That city has had so many chances to get a 2nd pro team in there and whiff every single time! I get why a team like the Orioles were not happy with the Nationals coming in, but 180 miles is far enough away to not have those issues. I'd guess the PDX Mariner fans make up about 10% of their base, that can't be enough for them to get their hackles up.
