Oh, I know we're never getting a MLB team here. I was cracking on the "near you" line.

Crack away, but it would move Portland up in line. Maybe not in your lifetime but never say never.

I don't know why MLB is going to keep the team there.
The new stadium will be in the same bad location in the south end of the St. Petersburg peninsula, not in Tampa where the football (near the airport) and hockey (on the waterfront) stadiums/arenas are located. Going from Tampa to St. Petersburg requires driving across long bridges. It's kind of like putting the Mariners in Bellevue but worse.

    Worst playoff attendance since 1919.

Location of Tropicana field. The shortest bridge from Tampa, US-92, spans 4.2 miles.

It really sucks that they are putting the stadium there. I have two good friends from college that work in the front office there and it really feels like there isn't much they can do to draw fans over the bridges to St. Pete.

The problem facing St Pete/Tampa, besides the bad location, is that Miami built a new stadium (as mentioned by Depressed Ginger in this video) and attendance after a few years went back down to near the bottom of the league. There's a lot working against that franchise. Being in Florida, and being in a bad location.

So they know all this but still decided to put the new stadium in that location? What’s the argument to have it there?

Yea ... so many things fighting against it, that's why they were all but signed, sealed and delivered to have 1/2 their home games in Montreal until that got nixed at the last minute.

It seems they think it can make it work together with re-development of the area.

"The Tampa Bay Rays, alongside the city of St. Petersburg announce plans for a new stadium to be built as part of the redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District. Welch reiterated that the Gas Plant District community was promised a stake in the redevelopment of the land."

I'm sure the stadium will be really nice, but I don't see how keeping it in the same area is going to improve attendance.

The one time I visited a handful of years ago, I really liked SP and the downtown area they had there, much more than the night we spent going out in Tampa. There is a chance to make it a really cool area, but if the locals aren't going to show up, then it doesn't really matter!

I'd be embarrassed if Portland got a team and had that shitty of attendance. Of course, they did lose so maybe the fans were justified.

Yeah, the original Willamette River site would have been lit if they could have made it work.

Not that it matters, but it can't both be unincorporated and part of Beaverton.

"The land is owned by the City of Portland but was annexed to Beaverton in 2003. It lies in unincorporated Washington County, adjacent to Tigard."
