After the expansion draft and related player movement, the biggest story could be the addition of designated players from within MLS. Today Seattle completed a transfer for Freddy Montero (he was on loan from a Colombian side) and Real Salt Lake did the same for Alvaro Saborio. Montero is the biggest name of the young South Americans who have been joining MLS over the last few seasons and will join Blaise Nkfuo and Alvaro Fernandez as Seattle's three DPs. Montero has scored 22 goals in 56 MLS matches over two years and has added 17 assists in that period. Saborio joined RSL on loan from FC Sion and scored 12 in 27 matches this season.

This is a big story because past designated players have been high profile outsiders joining the league. Montero and Saborio join Donovan as the only DPs who had established themselves in the league before getting the big money. I think we'll start to see this happening regularly from here on out. While getting a potential strong performer and box office draw is an ideal target, throwing a few bucks extra for an established star will help keep players in the league and give guys something to aspire to in the future.
