PHI snap winless run behind strong performance from Holder

Chester, Pa. – After the Union and Revolution first teams played to a thrilling 4-4 draw at PPL Park on Wednesday, Philadelphia’s reserve squad (2-5-1) topped New England (4-4-1) 2-0 at Widener University’s Quick Stadium in a rainy Thursday morning affair.

2010 first round picks Jack McInerney and Danny Mwanga tallied in the first half for the Union, and recently re-acquired goalkeeper Thorne Holder put on an impressive display to blank the Revolution.

LEHI, Utah (Sunday, September 18, 2011) – Visiting Sporting Kansas City secured all three points in MLS Reserve League play this morning at XanGo Field via a 1-0 victory over their counterparts from Real Salt Lake. The squads played a similar match to their regular season affair the night before, full of hard tackles, dangerous set piece opportunities and a lone goal making the difference, but this time it was the visitors claiming the full points courtesy of midfielder Davy Arnaud’s late penalty kick conversion.

Reserve Team, B Team - What Should MLS Do?
by Dave Clark on Jan 22, 2012 4:45 PM PST in MLS Dreams and Fantasies

In the past week discussion in England has sprung up regarding the right way to handle a reserve league. The current system is somewhat similar to what MLS currently has, where the reserve teams operate outside of the league pyramid. Andre Villas-Boas, manager at Chelsea, wants the English to try to adapt their system to be more like Spain and Germany, where the reserve teams become "B" sides that operate within the pyramid.

MLS has similar issues with its Reserves, but no entrenched history at the lower pro level. Some teams use their Reserves to keep deeper senior players fresh, while others use their 10 games to develop roster spots 21+ and get Academy players a taste of the pros. The idea of integrating Reserve teams with lower leagues in America isn't new on this site, but in light of the recent news out of England I revisited the topic with Adrian Hanauer at practice on Saturday

At the USL annual general meeting, the United Soccer Leagues informed its member clubs of a proposed agreement with Major League Soccer that would provide for an integrated third division/MLS reserve league. Some interplay is expected to begin in 2013, with full integration of the plan coming in 2014.

    The details as understood are:

    1. If an MLS city has a USLPRO team nearby, MLS will provide 5 players and pay their salary.

    2. If there’s no USLPRO team, the MLS reserve side will become a new, permanent team in USLPRO.

    3. All USLPRO teams will have an MLS affiliate.

It’s unclear at this point how far along the proposal is, though separate sources have confirmed that discussions are ongoing.

How the reported MLS/USL Pro Reserve League deal could help the Canadian Clubs
    [IMG]

The recent reports surrounding a possible integration between Major League Soccer (MLS) and USL Pro to form a reserve league in an effort to get young players more games have really got me thinking. I can definitely see how this would help North American soccer as a whole - and specifically the American markets - but what, if any, impact does this have on the Canadian market? And what can the Canadian clubs do in a similar vein?

Valencia's late goal earns 2-1 victory for Portland

    Sunday, April 7, 2013

PORTLAND, Ore. – Midfielder Michael Nanchoff registered a goal and an assist and forward Jose Valencia tallied the game-winner as the Portland Timbers Reserves defeated VSI Tampa Bay FC 2-1 on Sunday afternoon before 1,803 fans at JELD-WEN Field.

The interleague match between the Timbers Reserves and VSI Tampa Bay FC was played as part of a new player development partnership between Major League Soccer and United Soccer Leagues formed earlier this year. Sunday’s match was the first of several matches between MLS Reserve sides and USL PRO teams to be played in 2013.

Rapids fall 2-1 to USL side Harrisburg City Islanders

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Saturday, April 20, 2013) – The Colorado Rapids Reserves fell 2-1 today to the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL PRO. Harrisburg took an early lead on a second minute goal from Cris Hernandez. After the intermission, the Rapids got an equalizer from Homegrown Player Dillon Serna, but the Islanders responded in the 64th with a goal from Greg Jordan to secure the victory.

The Rapids featured a young squad, with Academy players Ricardo Perez, Austin Seifert, and Isaac Martinez (above) all seeing playing time. Additionally, Rapids midfielders Martín Rivero and Pablo Mastroeni were both brought on in the second half, Rivero getting his first competitive action since fracturing his foot on January 29. Mastroeni has missed the last four matches for Colorado due to a quad strain and returned to full training last week.
