Anything in that NW portion just past the Pearl District would be good for a AAA ballpark. Plenty of railroad tracks and industrial area to extend the Max out there.
building a AAA stadium is a waste of time and money. If you're going to go, go big. Build a damn pro stadium or nothing at all.
That'd be stupid if you didn't have an MLB team in place. You build a AAA stadium that can be expanded into an MLB team to lure one to Portland. I hope that's what eventually happens. And I do hope it happens in the pearl rather than Beaverton.
I was talking about Major League Baseball. Sorry if I wasn't clear. Building a AAA ballpark would be a waste of money.
City council approves $31 million towards PGE park deal. http://www.portlandtribune.com/news/story.php?story_id=126522744148645500 I do know that since AAA will be dropped from the stadium from 72 home games a year to 20+ plus (soccer) this will hurt the activites at PGE park. However, the city of Portland and Beaverton has found no home for the Beavers so its really its their fault for not pushing this team to stay. MLS is where its at baby. Suck it up, having MLS will have better nationwide coverage with media and tv coverage.
Wow, I worked last nights Timbers game vs the Rochester Rhinos. Complete sellout. total body count 15,418 people! The ticket office actually had to turn away about 50 people still waiting to buy tickets and this is when the game had already started after 5 minutes. The only thing I don't understand is that they added about 3-4 men's urinals to each bathroom so why did the management still block the last 10 rows in each of the 200 level area of the bowl? Was it a fire marshal issue with a crowded concourse? I will be impressed if this Timber attendance trend continues as the crowd is there this season and not for the Beavers.
When the Beavers used to play the Twins in games (once a summer, I believe), they'd get big crowds. And when the Mariners came down here a few times, they'd get big crowds. Anyone know what their average attendance #'s are or the last time the Beavers got a crowd over 15K? I know the AAA All Star Game last year drew 16K.
Good for the Timbers! Portland is a SoccerCity! I just worked the Beavers game last Thursday for FSN. No shit, there was only about 1,500 people there at most! It's funny, FSN like to cover the Thursday Beaver games thinking because if it's special Beer night, maybe more people will be in the stands. By the way, I LOVE THE TIMBER ARMY!
Check out our #'s vs the same day's MLS games. Houston v. Chivas Attendance: 14,843 Red Bulls v. FC Dallas Attendance: 13,667 Portland vs. Rochester Attendance: 15,418
MLS is going to thrive in Portland, and it's going to be the last "professional" sport we ever get. The only other option would be NHL, but PA would likely have to own the team for it to happen. I'm definitely going to attend MLS. I don't like soccer that much, but the atmosphere is awesome and it's an excuse to get drunk and rowdy in the sun.
I actually went to a Sounders game yesterday (I was up there and it was cheap). It made me really excited for when the Timbers make the jump. I think they said they had 30k+. And the British announcer was a nice touch too. Gonna definitely hit up some Timbers games this summer.
From what i was told from Ryan (head maintenance) guy at PGE, he said that the Widmer Beer garden on the 1st base side will be exclusive big $$$ seats where they will get their own restrooms. The Fred Meyer Deck already has the new concrete pillings in the ground for bleachers for next year. That's why there is new turf by the warning track and crushed brick out there (rubber warning track is gone). They need to let the pillings set and construction will start around early september because the last 4 timber games are on the road.
Old article but a good one to read. http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2009/09/pge_park_would_have_similar_ca.html 17,000 available, so why did they consider 15,418 a sellout? Do we have the fire marshall to blame?
Our market won't be so small now. I still think this is the best option to bring a pro sports team to our city. Look how many pro teams are in Phoenix. Hows this latest buzz on the timbers. We made the MLS soccer website. Wahoo!!! http://www.mlssoccer.com/content/portland-fans-thinking-major-final-minor-league-season I will be working the timbers game again on thursday and I will let you know how the crowd will be.
