International soccer star is coming home
Patrice Bernier accepts challenge of building Impact in MLS

Home is where the heart is…and for Patrice Bernier, his heart is coming home.

After playing nearly a decade across the pond in Norway, Germany and Denmark, the Brossard native will don the blue and white jersey of the Montreal Impact for a second time in his career.

“I’m a point in my career where I feel good and strong,” said the 32-year-old midfielder. “With the Impact playing in the highest league in North America, I felt the time was right to come home and help build the MLS edition of the Impact.”

NEW YORK – Add Collen Warner’s name to the list of MLS players keeping sharp across the Atlantic this offseason.

The Montreal Impact midfielder, who the club picked up in the Expansion Draft from Real Salt Lake, embarked Wednesday on a 10-day training stint with Championship club Brighton & Hove Albion FC.

However, Impact supporters have nothing to worry about for the time being. Warner’s agent, Kevin Legg, said via phone that his client was not on trial and was simply in Brighton to prepare for the upcoming MLS season, while also getting a taste of the English game.

Who will fill Montreal's Canadian quota?

Heading towards training camp, in preparation for their first season in North America's top flight, the Montreal Impact have already signed 2 Canadian players in Patrice Bernier and Greg Sutton. Under current MLS rules, it is still one less than the league minimum. The Impact have announced that they have given trials to 5 players who are considered by MLS as Canadians, all of whom played last year for the organization. They are: Reda Agourram, Simon Gatti, Mircea Ilcu, Nevio Pizzolitto and Eduardo Sebrango. One would have to guess that at least one of those players will be offered and sign a contract with the club, if not more.

Jesse Marsch and the Montreal Impact front office will have difficult decisions on offering MLS contracts with respect to the Canadian quota. Unless the Impact actively seek out another player, it would be expected that the team will pick from the 5 players named above and these trialists will need to be ready for training camp. From these players there are two clear paths the organization can take: they could choose to fill the roster with youth in Ilcu and Agourram, or they could also pick from their veterans if they feel they are playing at a high enough level and also if they do a good job challenging the 21 players who already have a contract

Denis Hamlett named Montreal Impact assistant coach
Hamlett was on Chicago's coaching staff from 1998 to 2009

Hamlett, 42, from Costa Rica, most recently served as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in 2011, helping the club in its inaugural season in MLS, but spent most of his coaching career with the Chicago Fire.

Hamlett, who is currently in Florida for the MLS Combine, joins a coaching staff that includes head coach Jesse Marsch, assistant coaches Mike Sorber and Mauro Biello, goalkeeper coach Preston Burpo, and physical preparation coach Adam Rotchstein.

Plotting Impact games to watch in 2012
    [IMG]

    Frédérick Jean-François,
    January 5, 2011

For the Montreal Impact, the release of the MLS schedule answered some questions on the number of games played at the Olympic Stadium and also the opponents from the Western Conference who will come to La Belle Province in 2012. Here's a quick look at the Impact's schedule for 2012.

The only match at the Olympic Stadium that could have trouble selling will be the match against Portland Timbers. After all, the last two matches in the MLS regular season the Impact will play at the Olympic Stadium are against star driven clubs in the Galaxy and the Red Bulls on the 12th and 19th of May

Impact's Marsch: We know who we're taking at No. 1
Montreal have made up their mind with top pick – so who is it?

The Montreal Impact’s first-ever MLS SuperDraft is less than 24 hours away, and Jesse Marsch’s homework is pretty much done. The first-year head coach confirmed to MLSsoccer.com on Wednesday that he and his staff have decided which player they will select with the first overall pick of Thursday’s draft.

So who is it? Not surprisingly, Marsch didn’t reveal the name of the player, though most observers see the first two picks as a game of poker between the club and rivals Vancouver Whitecaps, with Akron striker Darren Mattocks and Duke’s versatile Andrew Wenger at stake.

    Impact may take Darren Mattocks
    [IMG]

MONTREAL - Jesse Marsch didn’t drop a hint who the Impact will take in the MLS SuperDraft.

The team’s head coach didn’t have to because signs point to the Impact making Darren Mattocks from the University of Akron the first overall pick in the 13th edition of the league draft of top Generation adidas and U.S. college players in Kansas City on Thursday (12 p.m., TSN2, RDS).

Mattocks, a 21-year-old native of Portmore, Jamaica, is considered the top player available, but more than that he’s a forward, a position the Impact is lacking in as it prepares for its inaugural season in North America’s premier soccer league.

Mattocks scored 39 goals in 47 games in two NCAA Division I seasons at Akron and is ranked first of nine Generation adidas prospects.

    SuperDraft:
Montreal choose Wenger with No. 1 pick
Hermann Trophy winner Wenger headed to expansion Impact

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – With the first pick in the 2012 SuperDraft pick, the Montreal Impact snatched up arguably the best forward and defender in college soccer.

Though Darren Mattocks was rumored to be in the running for the top spot, Montreal went for what many called the most-polished prospect in the draft pool, drafting MAC Hermann Trophy winner and Generation adidas signing Andrew Wenger with the first overall pick.

Wenger, 21, was named both national player of the year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year following a standout junior season at Duke in which he scored 17 goals and contributed eight assists while playing out of position. Projected to play either center back or defensive midfielder in MLS, he was also named ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2010 before moving up top as a junior.

Marsch says Impact prepared to make "pretty big move"
Coach will begin to mold Impact, but can make splash to fill voids

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – With two months left until the start of the 2012 MLS season, Jesse Marsch believes the Montreal Impact are ahead of schedule.

“I’m going to say yes to that, but I’m very careful to be smart enough to know that this whole process is going to take time,” Marsch said on Thursday. “You don’t become a team overnight, but yes, I’m optimistic and pleased with where we’re at.”

The expansion squad formally gets to work on Monday, with player physicals and the process of molding a list of names into a unit.

HOUSTON – One of the downsides to professional sports is that players do not always get the swan song they imagine.

Brian Ching thought his career would end with a final season in a new stadium in front of the Houston Dynamo fans he loves. Instead, his selection in November’s Expansion Draft has him headed to the Montreal Impact. His dream vanished, Ching originally stated he would prefer to retire than play for Montreal.

It was an emotional outburst. After the dust settled, he mulled it over. Time and reflection, he said, made him realize that wasn’t the way he was going to go out, and that while he may not get the end he pictured, he wanted to control how it happened.

“I decided that I want to retire on my own terms,” Ching said at a press conference on Friday. “I don’t want to be dictated into retirement and, honestly, I feel like I have another year of good soccer left in me.”
