MLS releases details of Montreal expansion draft
Impact will select 10 players during draft on November 23

Head coach Jesse Marsch and the 2012 expansion Montreal Impact have signed two players to date: defender Nelson Rivas and midfielder Hassoun Camara. On Wednesday, they learned when they'll be able to get some teammates, as MLS announced the date and details of the 2012 MLS Expansion Draft.

The draft will take place on Wednesday, November 23, beginning at 2 pm ET.

As in past years, the expansion draft will last 10 rounds, meaning the Impact will select 10 players.

Current MLS clubs will be allowed to protect 11 players from their 2011 roster, though there are several categories of players who have special status. Generation adidas players and Homegrown Players on the team’s Off-budget Roster are automatically protected, without counting as one of the team’s 11 protected spots.

Designated Players do not have to be protected unless the player’s contract includes a no-trade clause.

Clubs must submit their protected roster to MLS on Monday, November 21.

MIDFIELDER SINISA UBIPARIPOVIC JOINS THE IMPACT
    [IMG]
Sinisa Ubiparipovic Will Remain with Impact in MLS

Posted on Tue, Nov 1, 2011

Montreal Impact announced Tuesday the signing of midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic. The 28 year-old American midfielder, born in Bosnia-Herzegovina, becomes the fourth player to sign with the Impact for its inaugural season in MLS, after Colombian defender Nelson Rivas, French midfielder Hassoun Camara and American goalkeeper Evan Bush. Ubiparipovic becomes the third member of Montreal's 2011 NASL squad to sign with the team in MLS.

“I’m extremely happy to be joining the Impact family for Major League Soccer,” said Sinisa Ubiparipovic. “I am looking forward to helping this team make the transition into the new league, and also start working on winning championships.”

“As a club, we are excited to have come to terms with Sinisa,” said Impact head coach Jesse Marsch. “With his MLS experience and success in the NASL this year, we think he will be an important piece moving forward for our move in MLS.”

In 2011, Ubiparipovic finished the season as the Impact’s leader in assists and third leading-scorer, registering three goals and four assists for 10 points in as many games, including eight as a starter. Ubiparipovic, who had joined the team on Aug. 2, was named the club’s Newcomer of the Year.

MLS club's first offensive signing urged to keep "open mind" on role
Ubiparipovic "honored" to join Impact for 2012 season

“The last time I spoke to him was before he left for South America,” Ubiparipovic said, referring to Marsch's recent scouting trip to Argentina, Chile and Ecuador. “He wants me to remain open to different scenarios. He knows I have experience in the league already, so we discussed about what it will take for the team to be successful next year. On a physical level, I just need to be fit and ready for the start of the preseason.”

In his short time with Montreal, the Bosnia-born midfielder has made quite the impression. His three assists and team-leading four goals in eight appearances earned him the “Best Newcomer” trophy alongside Ian Westlake and provided his team with some desperately needed creative spark.

Impact hunts for players in South America
Team focusing mainly on offensive talent

Impact sporting director Nick De Santis and head coach Jesse Marsch haven't been sitting with their feet up waiting for Major League Soccer to come to them.

The two recently completed an 11day scouting trip to South America for players who might be wearing Impact uniforms when the team joins MLS next year.

"We saw a lot of games, probably watched 15 in 11 days," De Santis told The Gazette this week. "We saw a lot of first-team reserve games as well as some Copa Sudamericana games that were going on. Basically, every night we were at a game."

De Santis and Marsch spent a week in Argentina, two days in Chile and two more in Ecuador.

"We have to evaluate and analyze everything, including the costs involved with bringing players from South America here, and compare them to the European market," De Santis said. "We also have to look at which players would adapt here and get to know their profiles and characteristics.

"We were able to sit down with a couple of players to get to know their personalities and motivation to come here," he added. "Now we're trying to put things together to see which players make the most sense and could help the team in the process of building it and, of course, we have to look at their price value."

Re: MONTREAL IMPACT (Impact de Montréal) FC

    Montreal and the DP dilemma

Today's Liverpool side with the likes of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez leading the attack is a perfect example of that kind of classic complementary forward partnership that used to be so common in a 4-4-2. Unfortunately for the Reds, it has yet to really produce anything meaningful.

Inzaghi and Toni fall into the category of the first forward, that of the penalty box finisher. They may have scored many goals in their careers, but much of their success is due to having played alongside technically graced players that were able to craft out chances for them - Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, Adrian Mutu and Franck Ribery to name a few.

Bringing in Inzaghi or Toni may very well necessitate bringing in a second DP just to help them out; would the Impact really want to use up one of three DP spots for a forward that would heavily depend on someone else to make them click?

It's not to say that Inzaghi and Toni would flop in Montreal, but players like Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba (Chelsea) - also in the final year of their contracts - would be able to contribute in more ways than one. Del Piero can score goals, set up teammates and is one of the best set play specialists around. Anelka can play in any position up front and Drogba can score goals in a whole variety of ways, including on free kicks.

Ex-Montreal striker Ali Gerba just wanted a fair chance,
    and he didn't get it

Almost a month after the end of the club's first MLS trial camp, Gerba opened up to TSN 990's Tony Marinaro and gave his own version of the story. And it goes like this...

Ali Gerba thought that he was a lock to make MLS team a year ago -according to himself- and was surprised when Marsch announced him the bad news. The Canadian international still has respect for the club, despite claiming that they used the 'easy way out' to send him packing.

"I think it's something personal against me", Gerba said today, before explaining that he had very good relationships with club president Joey Saputo, ex-Impact coach Marc Dos Santos and coach Jesse Marsch. Gerba claims that the new head coach even offered him to come and use the training facilities to help him get back to his full fitness.

    WILEMAN: IMPACT CONTINUE TO PREP MLS ROSTER;
    ANELKA A TARGET

As the Montreal Impact continue their preparations to join Major League Soccer in 2012, speculation continues surrounding potential big name additions to their squad. The Impact are exploring the possibility of signing a Designated Player, and French striker Nicolas Anelka remains a target.

Speaking with lesoccerplus this weekend, Impact Head Coach Jesse Marsch said the signing of Anelka "is still a possibility," but talked about the "tricky parts" involved in doing a deal for a big time Designated Player and "unique demands" that need to be met.

    Montreal Impact Academy
Candidates for the 2012/2013 Graduating Class

Last week I wrote an article on Toronto FC Academy and possible candidates for the next graduating class, so with the Montréal Impact coming into Major League Soccer next season I’ve decided to do something similar showcasing some of the talented players that could get a call up. However, the situation is a little different in Montréal as they are not only an expansion side having to go through an Expansion Draft, Re-Entry Draft and the MLS Super Draft. They are also going under stadium renovations as well as being coached by a former MLS veteran and first time coach Jesse Marsch who is part of former US National Team Coach Bob Bradley's coaching tree as one of his assistants

While I don’t want or like to make comparisons between the academies of either team in my opinion I think Montréal Impact Academy is a little further along in their development of players then Toronto FC, as the players I mention in this article are only five of about eight to ten players that could easily make this list.

Montreal executive Legendre says jersey will be on sale on Dec. 2
    [IMG]

“I can’t tell you much,” Legendre said with a laugh. “The only detail I can give you is that there will be elements in the shirt that the fans will definitely appreciate. I can also tell you that there will probably be more than one.”

The shirt will be made available on Dec. 2, and Legendre also confirmed that a store will be opened at the club’s new sales offices located on University Street.

“We’ve always wanted to be downtown, even more so during the offseason,” he said. “Having a store downtown is a good step forward for us.”

The club is also expected to launch its new website on Nov. 17, and then take part in the MLS Expansion Draft on Nov. 23.
