Another good thing is small forwards have a good track record the last decade in the lottery. There has only been a handful of true busts.
Moving up for Winslow... Portland Out: Batum, Crabbe, #23 Portland In: Landry, Jennings, Martin, #6 Detroit Out: #8, Martin, Jennings Detroit In: Batum, Crabbe, #23 Sacramento Out: #6, Landry Sacramento In: #8 Detroit gets a starting SF, decent prospect still in Crabbe to move down 15 spots. They're fairly young, not likely in need of additional rookies, really. Especially with SVG there. Sacramento saves a ton of salary to move down only 2 spots. I can see them maybe having to kick in a tiny more, but so be it. We add a backup PG, backup PF, taking on salary, but with the goal of getting to 6 to land Winslow.
no to Jennings. Bad fit, chucker, no defense and he's injured. We don't need a backup PF either (Unless we think LMA leaves)
I don't want Jennings the player. Ideally we look to flip him this offseason as an expiring deal. He's jus the cost of doing business, to get Detroit to move #8. EDIT: Flip Jennings to NY for Calderon. They shave a year off of Jose's contract, saving them money in the 2016 free agency class, we get a better fit on offense. As for backup PF, I envision our backup bigs in this scenario as Leonard and Landry. On defense, Leonard covers 5s, Landry 4s. On offense, Landry is down low, Leonard outside.
SFs have the best track lately as steals.. Especially if their big. Some of these guys were drafted as SFs and now play SG, but still an impressive list 2008 Nicolas Batum 25th (6'8) 2009 DeMarre Carrol 27th (6'8) Danny Green 46th (6'6) 2010 Paul George 10th (6'9) 2011 Kawhi Leonard 15th (6'8) Tobias Harris 19th (6'9) Jimmy Butler 30th (6'7) Chandler Parsons 38th (6'9) 2012 Draymond Green 35th (6'7) Khris Middleton 39th (6'7) 2013 Giannis Antetokounmpo 15th (6'11) 2014 KJ McDaniels 32nd (6'6) 2 guys I think could be added to that list for this year would be Sam Deckker and Justin Anderson. Deckker is big (6'9) and has all the tools you want in a SF. Hell be a steal. Anderson is an athletic lockdown defender with a developing outside shot. Hes a potential Kawhi Leonard style of player
Calderon at $8M for 2 years? Hell nah. Good idea with Leonard and Landry, but I think those guys deserve more than 15 minutes a game
Again, it's the cost of getting to 6. (or 8). I don't think Nic by himself is getting you 8. Detroit's not going to just dump 11+ in cap space on Nic, while looking to re-sign Jackson and Monroe. Removing Jennings makes it more palatable for them. Flipping Jennings for a better fit in Calderon, and maybe a little more makes it a better overall fit, IMO.
Looking at who they've interviewed and scheduled there is only one player that is projected to go that high - and Neil is bringing him in for a workout: Myles Turner
These guys do a decent job with there mocks. If this projection holds true I am not sure there is a need to move up. There are 4-5 guys who would help from 23 on. I still like Delon Wright who they have at 30. Plus you figure someone 22 and higher will fall as well. http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-mock-draft/2015/
