from what I can find, bower resigned in may of '03, before west was drafted. though I believe he was GM in Charlotte when they drafted Kirk Haston in the first round in 2001. I just see more misses than hits, and his hits seem to be 2nd round variety, which is always a crap shoot, and his misses were first round misses, which can hurt a franchise a lot more than misses in the 2nd.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/executives/bowerje99x.html Here's a comprehensive list of Bowers doings as GM. But, for some reason it doesn't list his first stint as a GM. But, yeah, I guess the more I look at Bower I don't like him either. David West was drafted when Bob Bass was their GM and Chris Paul was drafted when Allan Bristow was the GM.
In a vacuum I completely agree, but with this owner and this management structure? I'm not sure if it really matters.
When we have been successful, Bob Whitsitt, KP....both had plans and seemed to be allowed to execute them. I think PA needs someone who can sell him on what they are doing
Speaking of candidates: Ainge hasn't been bad. He's done a solid job with non-lotto picks: 2004: Al Jefferson | Delonte West | Tony Allen 2006: Rajon Rondo 2010: Avery Bradley He's not a candidate but Don Nelson was a hell of a talent evaluator in the 80's and 90's: Tim Hardaway | Mitch Richmond | Chris Mullen | Chris Webber | Lattrell Sprewell | Dirk | Steve Nash
I'd like Ainge. But, for some reason, I just don't think he'd ever come here. He's seemed to have disassociated himself from PNW.
Keep in mind, Ainga and Doc had one foot out the door before McHale gift wrapped KG to him. But I totally think the Blazers are waiting to talk to Ainge, and wouldn't be the worst hire
I agree with Run BJM, a good assess on Mullin. No one bats 1.000 but the repeated lottery blunders is too reminiscent of Telfair and Webster. And it wasn't even an Oden situation, they weren't felled by injuries (although Dunleavy had injury issues); they just weren't that good. Besides, I'm suspicious of the whole Warriors plan, which has always been run and gun no defense. It's entertaining when it works but it doesn't win. The Celtics/76ers 60 point playoff games are ghastly to watch, but I'd like to see SOME defense.
