Los Angeles Lakers (1-1; 13-5) at Boston Celtics (1-1; 13-6)

    NBA Finals Game 3
    TD Garden Boston, MA
    Tuesday, June 8, 2010 9:00 PM ET
    ABC TV, ESPN Radio
The No. 1 storyline for Game 3 of the NBA Finals Tuesday night is what tone Kobe Bryant establishes early. We have to think that Mr. Bryant will want to silence the Garden crowd early so they don't dicate the tempo for the next three games. Bryant took 20 shots Sunday night, but we know when he is 'on' he is capable of shooting around 30 shots.

Even if Bryant doesn't have a legendary game Tuesday night, the Lakers defense is the only way they lose this game. The Celtics feature three scorers, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo. For the Lakers to win, they need to shut down at least two of those players. Sunday night they allowed Rondo and Allen to have career games.

    Officiating

Some feel like Game 2 was one of the worst officiated games in NBA Playoffs history. Depending on who you ask, both the Lakers and the Celtics got robbed by the officials Sunday. Bryant had to take a seat with foul trouble (he only played 34 minutes) and was called for five personals. Ron Artest fouled out and Lamar Odom was also called for five fouls.

Kevin Garnett and Glenn Davis both got into foul trouble Sunday and played a combined 42 minutes, scoring six and eight points respectively. With the Boston frontline on the bench, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum combined for 46 of the Lakers 94 points.

If the Lakers can get the Celtics big men in foul trouble again and Bryant and Odom can avoid the whistles, the officials once again can play a huge factor in this series.

    Can they guard Ray Allen?

Ray Allen scored 27 of his 32 points in the first half and set a new NBA Finals record with eight three-pointers made. For a stretch not only was Allen hitting three-pointers with a hand in his face he hit a few with a Lakers guard late to rotate on to him. It doesn't seem that hard but they need to not allow Ray Allen to even catch the ball. And if Allen gets hot, the Lakers should realize that there's a good chance he'll continue to hit 3's.

    Can they guard Rajon Rondo?

Guarding Rajon Rondo is not a simple as it seems. To guard Rajon Rondo means guarding him in transition and when the ball isn't even near him. Rondo loves to sneak in pick up a lose ball or a rebound and head straight for the basket. In Game 2 the Lakers allowed Rondo to rack up 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 19 points.

    The Garden

If the Lakers can take the Garden faithful out of the game early in Game 3, it might help diminish their spirits a bit in Games 4 and Games 5.

The last time the Lakers were at the Garden was January 31, 2010. Ray Allen missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer that would have given the C’s the win but the Lakers completed the come-from-behind win 90- 89…Kobe Bryant hit a 16’ jumper with 7.3 seconds remaining to give the Lakers the 90-89 advantage…The Lakers outscored the C’s 20-8 over the final 8:53 of the contest…Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with 21 points and 12 assists while Tony Allen added 14 points off the bench…Andrew Bynum had 19 points and 11 boards for the Lakers while Bryant added 19 as well and a team-high six assists

    Kobe

Kobe Bryant had a quiet 21 points on 8-of-20 shooting. With just a day apart between games, Bryant won't have much time to rest his right knee which could be bothering him. But on the other hand, he should be playing with a chip on his shoulder because of the loss Sunday night-and playing at the Garden always motivates Kobe to take it to the next level.

    Bynum

Like Bryant, with just a days rest between Games two and three, Bynum's injured right knee could prevent him from having the kind of game inside he did Sunday night. In the first half the Lakers continually went to Bynum with success. If he can't move well in the post, he obviously won't be as effective.

    Artest

Artest's main focus should be on stopping Paul Pierce. Which he did a decent job of on Sunday night, but he took some bizzare shots (1-of-10 from the field). In Game 3 an occasional open jump shot will keep the Celtics defense honest, but the Lakers offense shouldn't flow through Artest.

    Bench Production

In Game 2 the Lakers bench combined for 12 points led by Jordan Farmar with seven points. The Celtics on the other hand got 24 points from their bench, including Rasheed Wallace and Nate Robinson each scoring seven points.

I don't know if you know this, but the winner of basketball games is determined by points. Free throws count as points, side out of bounds do not. Shooting 20+ more free throws until you start intentionally fouling them should help you win more than Kobe getting his minutes cut. He still played 35 minutes, his playoff average is 39 mpg. Quit crying.

I hear that Shapecity a focused Lamar will make the difference. Here is an excerpt from an article that suggests Lamar will play well tonight.

"After poor efforts in Games 1 and 2 Lamar Odom will be aggressive on both the offensive and defensive boards. Whenever Odom grabs a defensive rebound he will try to push the ball up the floor and look to get easy buckets in transition. Whenever he gets an offensive board look for him to use his length to get a layup attempt."

Article also says D-Fish will make shots tonight.

If Lamar is aggressive and productive, we're damn near unbeatable. Someone wake him the fuck up please.

You think Odom's baby mama drama with his wife are effecting him?

Re: NBA Finals: Boston Celtics vs. LA Lakers (1-1 tied series)

Here's a great recap of why we lost Game 2.

In conclusion, the Lakers suffered from some questionable calls BUT did themselves no favors with their clock management, shot selection, and most of all their sloppy play that resulted in turnovers. All in all, after making that baseline jumper with 5:21 left in the game, Kobe took 5 shots and made 1 (the three pointer after the offensive rebound on Ron’s circus possession). The Lakers had 4 turnovers including two when they tried to go into the post (offensive foul on Bynum with his illegal screen and the bad pass from Artest to Pau where the spacing and angle was bad). Gasol took 1 shot (the desperation 3) and Bynum didn’t have a single FGA. If you just read this paragraph you understand fully why the Lakers lost this game. They played poorly in the closing minutes and the Celtics took advantage of every mistake made to either get a basket or draw a foul. We’ve discussed this some already today, but in game 3 the Lakers must get back to basics and execute their sets with discipline and precision. On defense, they must find a way to combat the screen actions the C’s use to free Allen while also limiting the baskets the C’s get in transition and early offense. We’ll see tomorrow if they’re up to the task.

Kobe can't handle the Celtics' defence. He is missing shots and making poor decisions more often than he usually does. Got to give Thibodeau and the players credit.

It's difficult for Gasol or Bynum to post up, if 1-2 other guys are also in the paint - not enough space. Is it just because of triangle or mistakes made by players?

I love how Bynum is yelling at Lamar to get on Sheed, cause he hasn't proven he can guard Davis. I'm liking Bynum.

We should try to run pick and roll with Kobe and Gasol, if our offence relies on luck sequentially.
