The Rockets ran Royce White out of town and he was laughed at the whole time while dealing with severe anxiety and trying to transition to the NBA. He is the one that brought this issue to the forefront. Now he didn't do himself any favors by the way he communicated, but that is also probably a big part of his mental health issues as well. Iowa State was able to make it work for the season he played there, so it can be done. Just curious to me what changed to make the league embrace mental health now. It's a great thing, maybe Royce was just a few years too early.
White couldn't get on an airplane - that's not fixable in Houston. If he played in Philly, mayyyyybe.
That was not entirely the case. He did travel on planes while at Iowa State and was willing to with Houston. He wanted certain language in his contract about mental health and they refused.
Link? That's not what I read at the time. He sounded like a total asshole then. He may have later changed his story to revisionist history. Whatever; the guy to blame for the wasted #16 pick is GM Morey, not the player he drafted way, way too high.
Link to prove he took some flights? I don't care enough to look that up. I know he flew while at Iowa State. He definitely went back and forth on his word with Houston and didn't look good because of it.
He did and was approved to travel by ground transportation if needed with Houston. It was other issues about who would make the decisions about his mental health and the environment he was in that he went back and forth on. He did a few interviews recently and claimed he is a top 5 player in the world. Those kinds of comments don't help.
Yeah, that makes sense. Rondo is pretty clearly "on the spectrum" if you ask me. I think people assume that you can't be an athlete who is ASD and that's why a lot go undiagnosed.
She wouldn't refer to him as just a veteran guard, given that she talked about multiple all-stars for the bipolar player. (My first thought for the latter was LaMarcus.)
Jackie Mac seriously deserves all the awards for this series. She's done an amazing job with this topic.
It was recently revealed that NBA owners “want access” to the mental health files of their players. This would be a tremendous violation of privacy, writes Corbin Smith. https://www.thedailybeast.com/inside-the-nbas-vicious-battle-for-players-minds?ref=home
