So in other words, the referee nearest to the play and the crew chief were just plain noobs.

I think they either need more refs out there or they need to check the replays more often. Anything to gain some consistency or some accuracy on those calls...

There's going to be more reviewing of too many foul calls on one team over another. That should help the Warriors even out the calls during a game. Also, they should review what the line is on a game and the movement of the point spread, especially the over-and-under totals.

Here's more news on what Stern said. Do you guys believe that the NBA has the best officiating of all professional sports? I think the NFL has that.

"Stern said there was nothing suspicious about the frequency of Donaghy's foul calls, the size of his bank account or anything else that would have tipped off the league. And though the NBA stresses its system of monitoring referees gives it the best officials in sports, Stern said he wasn't shocked Donaghy slipped through the cracks."

    ...

"Donaghy was an NBA referee for 13 years, and Stern said he was rated in the top tier of officials. But this wasn't the first time he was in trouble with the league."

Maybe they should be looking into these guys too, or are they just incompetent.</div>

Man, you guys did know that the refs called even a foul on Caron Butler with 3 seconds left which was even more questionable than Gilbert's call. If the Refs wanted the Wizards to win, why would they call a foul like that on Caron which put the Warriors ahead up by 1?

Nah, the Warriors were SCREWED by the refs in that game. It was obvious. But it's not obvious whether they were just incompetent, or crooked. I don't think the refs were trying to fix the game, I just think they sucked a$$

I'm not taking Stern's comments for anything. I'll bet if they ask around people would say Donaghy would be right in the middle of the pack, like near the top of the bottom half of all nba refs.

Of course, it depends on who you ask. We figure if any nba gets the honor of reffing the playoffs, they have to be pretty good.

I don't think we'll ever know how many games Donaghy tried to alter to get it closer towards the betting lines. He'll have to come clean about that. There's a good chance he ain't going to disclose anything for a while. We'll have to wait until this unfolds or if he's put in a position to tell all.

Another odd twist to the Tim Donaghy scandal. LOL.

Ex-Black Panther wants to meet with Commissioner Stern. Rush was a co-founder of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, and was an insurance agent and member of the Chicago City Council before entering the House:
Congressman requests meeting with David Stern about NBA referee scandal, may call hearing
    July 26, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chairman of a House subcommittee is requesting a meeting with NBA commissioner David Stern concerning the betting scandal involving former referee Tim Donaghy.

Rep. Bobby Rush, who heads the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, said he is also considering calling a hearing on the matter "should the facts warrant public scrutiny."

"If the allegations prove true, this could be one of the most damaging scandals in the history of American sports," the Illinois Democrat wrote in a letter sent to Stern on Wednesday and released to the press on Thursday.

Donaghy is the target of an FBI investigation for allegedly betting on games, including some he officiated, over the last two seasons. He resigned July 9.

Rush wrote that he appreciated the need for the league to conduct its own investigation and that he would like to meet with Stern at "the earliest appropriate time."

"Unfortunately, fairly or not, the NBA, more than any other professional sport, has been consistently dogged with allegations that league referees needlessly affect the outcomes of games by making bad calls," Rush wrote.

I don't understand why the government needs to get involved with the NBA. Is this a publicity stunt on their part to get campaign PR? [IMG]

I'm sure Stern understands the severity of the gambling issue and is doing everything in his power to correct the mistakes so that it does not happen in the future.

Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy pleads guilty to felony charges

Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy pleads guilty to felony charges

By PAT MILTON, Associated Press Writer
    August 15, 2007

    AP - Aug 15, 10:44 am EDT

NEW YORK (AP) -- Former referee Tim Donaghy pleaded guilty to two felony charges Wednesday in an NBA betting scandal that rocked the league and raised questions about the integrity of games.

Donaghy faces a maximum of 25 years in prison when he is sentenced for conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting wagering information through interstate commerce. He was released on a $250,000 bond.

Donaghy provided recommendations, called "picks," to co-conspirators about what team they should bet on, said U.S. District Court Judge Carol Bagley Amon. If he was correct, they paid him.

The picks included information about games that Donaghy officiated, the government said.

It's always publicity. I remember last year during the NHL's gambling scandal, the NJ state police irresponsibly released most of the information in a big news conference just before the FBI took over the investigation. They wanted some recognition, before they handed the reigns over.
