He couldn't find a long term deal last year in a situation he liked, so he took the max we could give him for a minimum of time. He's been huge for us this year, and even bigger in the playoffs. He'll get paid.
Significant contributor on a 54-win team that will win a playoff series. That's about all it will take. Honestly, if we got Vasquez, I don't think I'd miss Mo.
He's been an important contributor for us for sure. But his numbers have gone down in the playoffs. His numbers this year are lower than most all of his career totals, and he's just getting older. That's just generally not a trend for ok, let's double his salary.
He took a pay cut to play for us bro. So it's not "doubling his contract", but paying him "what he's really worth"
He took a pay cut in his mind but it wasn't a scenario where someone was offering double last year and he decided to sign with us as a favor instead. With that said I do think unless you know you can get a clear upgrade you have to keep Mo. Even though I can't stand him at times.
I think this time with Mo it is about the length of the contract a little more then the amount of the contract.
What I wish if for Mo to stay with this team for one more year without opting out, giving us full mle. I know it ain't happening, but who knows? Maybe if we make the wcf, he will agree?
I know that, but one would be foolish to think he won't get paid his "true value" this summer. You can argue it all you want, but if we make it past the first round, his value will go up. No question...
Vasquez would bring ball movement and feed the post every night, good Mo shows up 1/3 of the time. I really think Dame and Aldridge would both benefit a lot from Vasquez.
Yep, plus he's a pretty damn good defender. We already have other guys with that scoring mentality; a distributor who defends would be the perfect addition to this team.
But what will Vasquez want? He's going to get a full MLE IMO. That leaves us nothing for other players.
Vasquez is a fine player but he doesn't bring the same things Mo does. If we bring him in then one of either CJ or Barton would have to become a Vinnie Microwave. I don't think they can do that in limited minutes. I know they can score in heavy minutes but they both would probably take time to heat up.
His best year was two years ago I'm NO; he had a sub-15 PER this year, and has had his minutes drop a lot (just 21.5 mpg in Toronto). He might command less than you think. I'd offer 4y, 18M.
I like the ideas of Vasquez, Stuckey and Ariza but those just aren't realistic because I think all of those guys will want the full MLE up to 8 million or so. I think if we could bring back Mo for a reasonable deal (3 years/12 mil) and brought in some vets like Pierce/Marion (wouldn't be easy but possible... would be great off the bench) and Diaw/Okafor we would be so set for a championship run.
I just don't really get where you're getting his true value from. What stopped him from getting it last year, or what makes it where what he got wasn't close to his true value?
There were a lot of variables IMO. For one, the cap money was used to land a lot of bigger free agents. Most of the other teams that could afford "cap space or exemptions" already used theirs. And the ones that did were going nowhere. This summer is a whole new animal. There are a lot of teams with cap space or exemptions. There aren't as many free agents as there were last summer with more teams willing.
Are you expecting Toronto to not offer him a qualifying offer? I fully expect them to, which means he'll be a RFA, which means you'll have to overpay for him.
