Garber: Club to announce permanent home probably 'shortly'

PHILADELPHIA -- Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber said Thursday that NYC FC probably will announce a permanent home "shortly."

During a break between the first and second rounds of the MLS SuperDraft at the Philadelphia Convention Center, Garber said the expansion, which will begin play in 2015, there was no delay in the team making a decision on a permanent home.

"There's not a delay," he said. "I think shortly they probably will announce a place. They're just finalizing all their details. They've got some time. They've got to get a great spot."

NYC FC had targeted a place just south of Yankee Stadium in the Bronx as a possible home to a $400 million, 28,000-seat soccer specific stadium, but club CEO Ferran Soriano said there were several possibilities within the five boroughs.

NYCFC Makes its Case to New York City
    [IMG]
The expansion club will strive not only to be an MLS giant, but eventually one of the world’s elite football clubs

Last Friday morning on Jan. 10, I was invited to attend the first official press conference of Jason Kreis as manager of New York City FC. Joining Kreis on the dais at the Grand Hyatt Hotel was NYCFC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna, Manchester City and NYCFC CEO Ferran Soriano and Manchester City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain.

The theme of the day, besides welcoming Kreis, seemed to be that of the new club’s leaders stating their case to New York City and to the North American soccer nation, many of whom have been quite incredulous as to the Manchester City owner’s agenda in establishing the club.

Manchester City purchase A-League's Melbourne Heart,
    aim to mimic NYCFC model

New York City FC will already have a sister club Down Under when they begin MLS play in 2015, with the announcement Wednesday that majority owners Manchester City FC have purchased a controlling share of the A-League's Melbourne Heart, effective immediately.

Much like City's partnership with Major League Baseball's New York Yankees in the establishment of NYCFC, the ownership group of the Melbourne Storm of Australia's National Rugby League will have a minority stake (20 percent) in the soccer team.

“We are excited about the opportunity to make Melbourne Heart one of the most successful football clubs in Australia and throughout the region," said Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano), who also played a central role in the establishment of NYCFC, in a statement. "We believe the strong sports culture of Melbourne, combined with the football and commercial expertise within our consortium, will make for a powerful combination both on and off the pitch."

New York City FC coach Jason Kreis says team can bring in four Manchester City players on loan
    [IMG]

NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis told Manchester City’s website on Wednesday that the new MLS club will be allowed to carry four players on loan from its parent club in England, the first clear indication that there will be a direct link between the sides in the future.

“We will have the ability to take four players on loan from the club here, so I’m looking a lot at the younger players, and the U-18s and the U-21s at the moment,” Kreis said. “And also the players that are out on loan.

"We have a very big interest in bringing some City players over to join us in New York and I certainly think there’s the talent there. And the ambition is there as well, so we’ll have to get with those guys over the next six months to a year and see whether or not that’s something they would like as well.”

Yankees Trademark Concerns Delay NYCFC Logo Launch
    [IMG]

New York City F.C. were set to reveal two crests on Monday for fan voting.

Instead, the soon-to-be 20th MLS franchise stood conspicuously quiet.

As it turns out, plans for their badge reveal hit an unexpected snag. EOS has learned that some in-house legal trouble has delayed the team’s long-awaited campaign. Of the two badges set to be presented to the general public, one failed to get final approval from the Yankee side of the NYCFC ownership due to “infringement of the baseball team’s intellectual property.”

The badges have been designed by two separate sources; one, an outside designer, and the second, an in-house team. Interestingly enough, it was the in-house design that sent up red flags at Yankee legal. Sources tell us the badge in question fell too close to the trademark design of the Yankee’s image, but would not give further detail as to the design flaw itself. The other badge, described as a more “classic” offering, has passed the initial consent of both owners.

    BE THE BEGINNING.

Be part of New York City's newest sports team from the very beginning by designing and submitting your own FC badge. It could be your name, your pet's name, your business or your 7-a-side team - whatever represents you as a fan of New York City.

The official New York City FC badge will then become a mosaic, made up of all the submitted badges. A lasting tribute to the founding fans who were with us at the beginning.

NYCFC unveil two club badge designs, ask fans to vote
    [IMG]

New York City FC are leaving the future badge of the club in their supporters hands.

On Monday, NYCFC revealed two badge designs created by Alfalfa Studio’s Rafael Esquer and asked fans to vote to decide which design will become the club’s official badge. Fans have from Monday through March 13 to vote on their favorite badge design.

Both designs are influenced by urban artifacts in New York City. The design on the left features a shield in the shape of the seal of New York City, with overlapping NYC letters in the middle. The design on the right is shaped like an old subway token and also has the same overlapping NYC letters in the middle. Both crests have the words “New York City” above the letters and “Football Club” below.

“This badge is to be the symbol of our club, a symbol of our players and we hope in time, a symbol of this city,” NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna said in a statement. ”That is why we decided to give our fans the power to take part in such a fundamental way. Thanks to the work of Rafael Esquer we feel that we have two designs that truly represent our club and our city, and we’re excited to see which badge they choose.”

New York City FC stadium announcement expected within a month
    [IMG]

NEW YORK – New York City FC will soon have a place to call home.

Claudio Reyna, the former US national team star and NYCFC's director of football, told a handful of reporters at the club’s official badge unveiling on Thursday night that an announcement for the temporary stadium is looming.

It has been widely speculated that Yankee Stadium will host NYCFC when the MLS expansion franchise’s inaugural season gets underway in 2015, but Reyna did not confirm or deny that rumor during the ceremony.

Instead, he kept things simple by saying that a decision on the venue would be publicly made in the coming weeks.

Etihad Airways to sponsor MLS club NYC FC
    [IMG]

“New York is a legendary sports town, as well as a thriving global city with a rapidly expanding soccer fan-base,” said Ferran Soriano, CEO of Manchester City, back in May of 2013. “We are thrilled to contribute to the energy and growth of New York City Soccer. In the Yankees, we have found the absolute best partner for developing a world-class sports organization and a winning team that will carry the New York City Football Club name with pride.”

So it might not be too surprising that Etihad Airways, the sponsor for Manchester City is also the sponsor for NYC FC, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Etihad Airways announced as official airline partner of Major League Soccer

Within the new agreement, Etihad Airways becomes the official airline partner of MLS in the United States. It is the Abu Dhabi-based airline’s first multi-year sports sponsorship in the territory and one that underscores its expanding commitment to the U.S. market.

New York City F.C. to Play at Yankee Stadium for Three Years

New York City F.C., a team that will enter Major League Soccer next year, will play its first three seasons at Yankee Stadium, according to two people familiar with the team’s plans.

The team, which is jointly owned by the Yankees and Manchester City of the Premier League, is expected to make the announcement next week.

The Yankee Stadium solution is a temporary reprieve; the team must find a site for a permanent home and construct it, and the three-year commitment at Yankee Stadium could be a hint at how difficult that might be.

Mayor De Blasio begins ‘dialogue’ on Bronx soccer stadium
    [IMG]

Mayor Bill de Blasio has not given up on former mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposal for a soccer stadium near Yankee Stadium.

"The de Blasio administration has begun a dialogue with key stakeholders on how to best proceed on the construction of a soccer stadium that also invests in community benefits, preserves public space and provides good-paying jobs," Marti Adams, a de Blasio spokesperson

New York City FC outline plans for Yankee Stadium's baseball-to-soccer conversion

Per a release, NYCFC's 2015 home schedule will not have an impact on the schedule of the stadium's primary tenants, Major League Baseball's New York Yankees.

"By hosting the New York City FC for its inaugural season, Yankee Stadium will be hosting a very special chapter in sports history,” Yankees president Randy Levine said in a statement. “The Yankees are pleased to welcome New York City FC, all of its players and its fans, to our home, and believe the team’s dynamic presence in 2015 will make the stadium the most vibrant venue in the world.”

According to Yankees chief operation officer Lonn A. Trost, the stadium will be downsized from its current capacity of 49,642 seats to 33,444 seats for MLS matches. The field will be 110 yards by 70 yards. Conversion of the stadium from baseball to soccer, and vice versa, takes three days.

New York City FC announce ex-Yankee Mariano Rivera as first season-ticket holder

Following a 19-year career that saw him retire from baseball last fall as arguably the greatest closer of all-time, former New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera is making the jump to the Yankee Stadium starting rotation.

No, not that starting rotation. He really is gone from the game of baseball for good.

Instead, New York City FC announced on Monday that Rivera would be the very first season-ticket holder for the club's inaugural Major League Soccer season in 2015 — Account No. 42.

"I’m proud to be the first one. I’m used to being a closer, always the last one. I’m a starter now," said Rivera at a press conference announcing the club would play its debut season at the famous Yankees venue. "I’m a big supporter of the team. I wish the team the best. Definitely, you guys will have my support. And hopefully many fans will come.

NYC FC Details How It Will Co-Exist With Yankees

NYC FC yesterday confirmed that it will play its inaugural MLS season in ’15 at Yankee Stadium, a move that solidifies the team's short-term future and allows season-ticket sales to begin. The club will play all 17 home games in the ballpark, which will have a reduced capacity from 49,642 for baseball to 33,444 for soccer. The pitcher’s mound will be removed prior to each NYC FC match. It will take three days to completely reconfigure the park from baseball-ready to soccer-ready.
