I've heard that certain massive solar flair events might cause similar damage to the power grid. They say ones in the 1800s did a lot of damage to telegraph lines, and if were to happen today, it would cause a lot of problems. But our national goverments can't get around to spending money to protect us from things like this.

How many missiles does Un get to fire off before war is declared. How many nuclear tests. How patient is Trump? At what point will he feel forced to take out North Korea. Its Mockery and threats for now. How long till he takes action and presses the button? On the otherside of the coin, how long until Kim Jong Un is forced to shoot a missile at us. If he does nothing he will look weak in front of his people, and they will lose respect for him. Something he can't tolerate. There is only so much postering he can do before he has to shoot a missile at us. Well, I guess he can publicly execute people with anti aircraft weapons and the fear will keep him looking powerful. But, for how long.
Why can't countries have missiles and nukes? I would prefer no further nations get nukes. I wish the countries that currently have them greatly reduce them. But this is 70 year old technology. Is testing missiles and nukes enough for us to declare war on a country?
If one country has nukes and missiles then all should. Seems fair right. But, how many are randomly shooting off missiles over other countries. I believe most other countries if not all have the decency to say we are testing nukes, we are going shoot a missile for testing, etc. Testing is probably not enough to go to war. But again un is being careless. He is shooting off missiles left and right, to posture for his people. Is intervention neccesary? Un is crazy, Trump is crazy. I guess it just comes down to who is crazier
Reading a little about this, it isn't clear whether it's a clear and present danger or not. Strategically, maybe it doesn't make sense to try an EMP attack, because you are going to get nuked back whether you detonate in the air or on the ground - don't you want to actually kill a few Americans before you are wiped out, rather than just destroy our computers? Maybe an EMP attack leads to breakdown of our civilization, maybe it doesn't. Nuking NYC and DC seems like a better bet to me. Would be interested in hearing from any local defense experts (@BrianFromWA ?) with a more informed view than mine. barfo
