At this point, for the salary, I'd rather have McCollum, who is only going to get better at creating good shots for himself, and burying a three once or twice a game. Gordon's defense may be worse than CJ's, which is a saying something.

CJ is extremely talented.... right now he seems unsure of himself, which is so strange because the guy was so confident in SL and DLeague. He and Lillard are very different in that regard. Dame never showed a bit of fear from day one. I think CJ is still trying to find his role and feel his way in the rotation, but the talent is there. He can drive, he can shoot, and he can pass, but we are definitely seeing that he's not a point guard, which is fine because we already knew that from summer league.

That Paul George dunk is the best I've ever seen. In the flow of a game seconds after playing intense defense is way more difficult than having 5 minutes and an open rim.

The best part is it happened in a game vs. Flop City. Not only did the Pacers easily beat the overrated Clippers, George totally stole the spotlight from their overrated superstar. Probably confused the heck out of everyone at Sports Center that the Dunk of the Night (of the Year?) came in the IND/LAC game, but it wasn't Blake Griffin.

Re: OFFICIAL 2014 Around the NBA thread

BTW, in a comparison of 'superstars" from last night's game, Blake Griffin had 19 points on 6-18 shooting. Paul George had almost twice as many points (36) on fewer FG attempts (12-17).

Look for George to win Eastern Conference Player of the Week:

"George shot 12-for-17 overall, 5-for-6 from the 3-point range. In the last three games, George has averaged 30.7 points, shot 30-for-52 (.577) overall and 13-for-21 (.619) from 3-point range."

Another interesting fact I didn't know:

"At 21-1, the Pacers have assured a winning record at home for the 25th consecutive season, the longest active streak in the league."

That's an impressive streak. The Pacers haven't always been a great team, but even when they were bad, they took care of business at home.

I remember that they were my favorite non-Blazer team in the late 80's early 90's. We always let my little brother be "Haywoode Workman" in our games. Their series with BOS in 91 was one for the ages.

I don't consider either Griffin or George to be "superstars." All-Stars? Sure, but neither has done enough yet in their career to make me call them 'superstars.'

The term isn't thrown around because of their actual production on their court. It's the ratio of plays to highlights these days, and marketability. Not ability.

Re: OFFICIAL 2014 Around the NBA thread

The league has a way of anointing superstars that's based more on marketability than accomplishment. Once anointed, they get favorable treatment form the officials, get featured on the NBA web site and TV promotions, get more endorsement deals, etc.

I agree with PapaG that Blake Griffin does not have superstar accomplishments, but the NBA definitely markets him as a superstar. Every time he dunks the ball (doesn't matter if the Clippers win or lose) it's going to be all over NBA TV and nba.com. Jeez, it's just two points. We know he can dunk already. Ever since his rookie year, he's gotten extremely preferential treatment from the officials.

Paul George has already accomplished more than Blake Griffin, and seems to be the NBA's newest chosen one. Unlike Blake Griffin, George is actually improving and may truly have superstar talent to go with his superstar pedigree. He won MIP last year at the age of 22 and has improved even more this year at the age of 23. If the Pacers make the finals, especially if they win, I think George will have the credentials to match his superstar status.

We agree! I just don't think George is quite to what I consider a "superstar." If the Pacers make it to the Finals behind a dominant George, that would prove a lot to me, and would elevate him to the level of a Durant, IMO, if he has huge numbers in doing so.

LeBron James is definitely top echelon, though, followed by Durant, IMO.

George's numbers aren't really superstar numbers. Batum could do better if he was the number one option on a team. He rebounds and passes better than George.

Repped. Agree on all points, especially the prerequisites George has left to do in order to enter the true "superstar" class.

Re: OFFICIAL 2014 Around the NBA thread

And that's why I hate David Stern. He made the league this way. After Stern saw what a guy like Michael Jordan could do for the league, he realized that he needed more stars like MJ. That's when the league stopped being about the teams and started being about the stars. It gave all the power to the players and created an environment where stars reign supreme. Even if the star isn't that good, they have to get their points so they give them 10-15 FTA per night. If you look at Durant's 50+ game the other night, he made something like 12 or 13 free throws. In my mind, that diminishes the accomplishment. James Harden shot 25 FTA in a game this season. He shot more than his opponent's entire team. It's dishonest, it's fabricated by the league, and it ruins my favorite sport. I hate Stern, I'm glad he's going, and I hope Silver does his own thing. I'm sure he won't though.

Not impressed with greg monroe so far against the clippers. I always hear so many things good things about him. It would be nice if he shows up in the 2nd half.

How are the Clips looking? Why are they winning games without Paul?

Re: OFFICIAL 2014 Around the NBA thread

This the first game I have watched of theirs in a while. So i am not sure, but this game their bigs are dominating so far. (Jordan and Blake) which I did not anticipate. I thought Detroit would win this game with their front line. Still another half to go....
