The "all-star" criterion is so utterly stupid. Jamal Magloire, coming out of retirement, would still be an all-star while CJ is not. Pretty sure 101 out of 100 GMs would pick CJ over Magloire.
Yes, I'm using an extreme example to make my point, but the point still stands. Being an all-star should have NO bearing on a player's worth.

But what does that "win" us? Ultimately it makes us a shallower team, and therefore worse. It's not even addition by subtraction (the way dropping Turner would be), because neither is in the rotation.

It wins us a bit of salary cap flexibility for next season if we honestly can deal those 2 for expirings. That would be huge, especially since they offer nothing. That money could be used on players who help the rotation next year.

CJ won’t be an all star because guard is significantly deeper, especially in the West, than power forward.

I think CJ is probably seen as a) more talented b) more durable and c) more skilled overall around the league, thus higher value...

But it doesn't, really. Removing Harkless/Meyers salaries don't give us any (much) money to sign anyone. We have the MLE regardless of whether H/M are on the books or not. They might be the difference between the mini-MLE and the full MLE (not sure), but it's unlikely we'd sign anybody better than Mo with either. The cap flexibility is not "huge" - at best, it's minuscule. Financially the only thing it would really do is get us under the lux tax line, but not below the cap.

As my best friend often says, "Betting than nothin'." Actually that isn't reassuring.

Well if we get below the tax we can offer someone the non tax paying MLE and that could make a big difference on the caliber of player we’d be able to sign.

Shabazz for Hernangomez makes sense if we plan on trading Davis.
