Is there a certain type you like or would you wear various ones as the GM?

You talking about now or in July?

Right now, they could offer as much as 6.5M, which is less than the 8.4M non-tax MLE, but more than than the 5.2M taxpayer MLE.

In July, if they want to keep Nurkic, they'll need to not offer any more than the taxpayer MLE, because use of more than that would cap them out at the apron (projected to be around $129M). The 9 salaries on the books for next year, plus the dead money, plus the charge for their first round pick, plus whatever non-tax MLE is given to whomever, would leave less than $10M to resign Nurkic, and that won't be enough.

Ok so pretty much if they wanted to use the full MLE and keep their FAs, they'd still have to shed some salary before free agency, correct? And how much would they have to clear? I'm an idiot.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Once you use the non-taxpayer MLE, you're hard capped at the apron (~$129M). So how much the Blazers need to shed depends on how much you think they'll need to retain Nurkic (and any other free agents you'd want to keep, like Napier or whomever).

Would Layman’s contract affect any of this? I don’t believe it’s guaranteed.

Any dollars they keep on their player payroll affects it. If they dropped his salary, that's more that they could use towards the apron but Layman's salary is peanuts, relatively ($600k or so).

You're correct--but it would only open up about $1M in space which really wouldn't make a ton of difference if we lose our ability to match all RFA's, which would be the biggest drawback in our current situation to using the non-tax MLE.

Maybe there’s a scenario where we re-sign our pending RFAs before FA?

I really don’t think there’s gonna be a huge market for unrestricted guys, nevermind for RFAs.

That would just move the Blazers back over the tax line and they'd lose the full MLE anyway.

What if they dropped layman and renounced connaughton or Napier

PRETTY MUCH WHAT IM ASKING (LIKE A MORON) IS HOW DO WE GET THE FULL MLE WHILE STILL BEING ABLE TO HOLD ONTO NURKIC AND NAPIER

Right now, I think the Blazers have about $10-11M of space beneath the apron. The full MLE would eat about $8.4M of that, leaving $1.6-2.6M over and no free agents signed. How much do you think Portland needs to sign Nurkic? Cut that amount of salary minus a couple million dollars. If you want to retain any free agents other than Nurkic, you need to cut their projected salaries from elsewhere on the roster as well.

Long story short, since the full MLE is almost as much as the amount the Blazers have to use under the apron, you almost have to cut salary dollar for dollar to balance any free agents you re-sign.

so we wouldn't even be able to use the tax paying MLE without losing a RFA?

Portland COULD use the tax MLE and still re-sign all their FA, in theory. However, it would cost hella alot of money to do so. So it's not going to happen.

Expect to re-sign Nurk ($12-16M +/-), Ed ($8M +/-), and then filling out the roster with players who all make <$3M per year.

The tax-payer's MLE doesn't hard cap you, so far as I know. The reason for the hard capping with the full MLE is to prevent dropping just under the tax line, using the full MLE and then re-signing all your own free agents.

My favorite argument by Olshey apologists is “how did you expect him to get in on any of these deals with our assets?” That’s the point! Who’s fault is it that we don’t have enough assets?!
