The apologists' theories at the time were that the Clippers trade made the Pelicans trade possible. If we were operating from a position of desperation (still above the tax), then the Pels would never have given us a decent return; so the Clips deal (a week before the deadline) was necessary to get us below the tax and into a decent a bargaining position.

I hated the "logic" then, and still do.

I just think we were desperate to get rid of that salary and all of the short guys.

We had no leverage since everyone knew Dame had put the team on notice and we were too unbalanced to be close to the team Dame wanted.

I don't think Norm would've become what he has if he'd stayed with us. Same as Jermaine O'Neal and Zach Randolph. Sometimes they need a change of scenery to flourish. We had too many small guards - I'm nothing but happy for Norm. Of course, it didn't work out so well for RoCo, did it?

I never really bought that 'excuse', but I did allow for the possibility the Vulcans were making payroll reduction demands Cronin had to deal with. Powell had just signed a 5-year deal and it was kind of credible Seattle was telling Joe to dump it, ASAP

Yeah seems like working a reactionary position instead of being active.
