That appears to be a poor correlation in the graph and not really identifying a cause/effect story.

Opponents attempt more 3pnt shots with the further right the teams are on the graph (ie - teams attempt a 3pnt shot about 47% of the time against NO and only 34% of the time against Minny).
Good defensive teams (Lakers, Memphis, Rockets) are at the bottom of the graph vertically while poor defensive teams are at the top (Kings, Wiz, Blazers).

If there was a stronger correlation, the teams who give up the most 3pnt shots (NO, Miami, Charlotte) would also be the worst defensively while those who give up the fewest (Minny, Utah, Phoenix) would be the best defensively.

Stronger than last year though were we saw a pretty large shift from what we've seen historically. Problem is, that shift was caused primarily by 5 teams that had really good defensive personnel (Bucks, Celtics, Clippers, Heat, Raptors).

Now we are seeing some teams with lesser personnel trying to implement these principles--mostly offering more help off the strong side wing and corner, and to a lesser extent getting more aggressive with their bigs in pnr--with pretty bad results and Portland is one team in this group.

A lot of those elite teams last year are also seeing shooting luck revert back to normal levels.

Those are Canadian 3s, they only count for 2pts in the USA.

It has something to do with the exchange rate and the metric system.
