they are over the cap so any money saved = 2x. im sure you can figure out the rest but maybe...

they send out 10 million take back 9 million= 2million savings

they send out gooden for a trade exception = 9 million dollar savings

travis outlaw and future 2nd for drew gooden = 1.8 million dollar savings

    so on and so forth

prorated for the season length i imagine, but yeah, not to mention people including cash.

I see. I think you mean they are over the luxury tax threshold, though.

Sending Gooden out for a trade exception only works if there is some team under the cap that wants to rent him for the rest of the year, no? Chances of that seem slim, since there are few teams under the cap.

Travis makes $4 mil and Gooden makes $4.5, so I'm not sure how you can save 1.8 million on that deal. Especially since the season is already 2/3rds over. More like $350 thousand. And why would someone send cash in order to get a end-of-the-year rental player?

I agree that it's not the slam dunk/robbery deal many believe it to be, but I think they are definitely better. Not by much, but I think it elevates them to No. 2 status in the West. Yes, Butler's and Howard's careers have been rather similar, though Butler has played significantly more minutes while producing at the same high level. Haywood is a better shot blocker than Gooden and may help them match up better with Pau/Bynum in the playoffs.

you asked "how do you swing them for more savings?", so i told you. that is how. it is possible.

and thank you for explaining to me how trade exceptions work. good stuff. except you are wrong, they do not need to be under the cap.

and you ask me why would anyone pay money for a rental player? the answer is...... TO MAKE YOUR TEAM BETTER.

outlaw makes 3.6 million ill do the math for you.

    (4.5 - 3.6) x 2 = 1.8

I didn't mean to sound condescending. But I'm not sure I was wrong. Are you saying that we could trade for Gooden and send nothing back to Washington? Because I don't think that's correct. If it was true, then we could also trade for Amare and send nothing back to Phoenix.

Washington can take nothing back, it's true. But the team they trade with can't send nothing and take Gooden - unless they are under the cap.

Sure. Now make a list of the rich teams who are in title contention and need Gooden as the final piece. Probably a short list.

Ok, I'll believe Storyteller's salary number. But that still only makes the savings $600K or so, because it isn't a full season.

if we had a trade exception large enough, sure we could.

unless they have a trade exception...

dont need to be in title contention imo, i would say playoff contention. and as far as rich goes, what does that mean? teams that arent bankrupt? or shedding salary? you dont have to be mark cuban to pay for an improvement, thats silly.

    boston
    orlando
    lakers
    cleveland
    portland
    toronto
    miami
    chicago
    okc
    sas
and more im sure would love to have him. we can both take guesses as to how many would pay $500,000 or more to get a deal done.

umm thats alot of money for doing nothing but answering the phone.

Ah, now I understand what you were saying. Yes, they could trade him to a team with a trade exception big enough. Are there any such teams?

Teams rich enough to think about sending cash to get a rental player, I meant. Obviously Dallas and Portland can do that whenever they want, and maybe a few others. Everyone else would have to think about it pretty hard.

Certainly, and I'm not suggesting that Washington wouldn't be interested in saving $600K. I'm sure they are indeed looking for more trades to get away from the tax. We'll see how successful they are in the next few days.

over 4 million i think orlando has areal big TE from the hedo deal i believe, denver has one, miami, utah and NO also but they arent using it. ALOT of teams have smaller ones they could use as well for other players.

i agree though it should be interesting, they are ripe for the picking right now. they would probably consider ANY deal that saves them ANY money.
