They are going to have a hard time getting below the Hornets, Wizards, and especially the Bobcats, but if they just don't win a game the rest of the season it will suck.

I saw Tom Penn talking about this on ESPN, and he said the only way the Nets get the pick is if they WIN the lottery. In other words, if they get the #1 pick.

    That makes zero sense.

He might have meant if they "win" the lottery to move into the top 3 (only the top 3 are done by lottery, the rest fall in place by record).

If he really meant it's top-1 protected then he's almost certainly wrong. It'd be great if he weren't, but I'm pretty sure he would be.

That's what he meant. Basically, New Jersey won't be able move up in the draft without "winning" the lottery. Whether that's the first, second, or third pick is determined by when your balls came up after 'winning' the lottery. They can't move up in the draft without some lucky balls bouncing their way.

As crappy as NJ has been playing, you have to imagine at some point soon, management will pass the edict down to the coaches that the team should tank. They are going to lose D-Will regardless, IMO. I wouldn't be surprised in G-Dub wanted to walk. Kris Humphries will likely try to walk. Lopez likely will be the one piece remaining, since he is a RFA. The guys who are FA's won't just freely tank because they're playing for a contract, but that won't stop coaches from being more aware of the overall situation, and making decisions based around tanking.

They cannot afford to lose one of the few assets they have. So I could see them putting everything they have into losing, just to try to land in the Top-3 and keep their pick.

This was my one fear about the pick - that we won't get it until next year. On the other hand, I do believe that would mean more cap room (since don't picks have cap holds?). But I'm impatient and don't want to wait.

they still wouldn't catch the bobcats. as noted even the worst case for us (they finish 2 or 3) is still a coin flip for the pick.

that said i think 4-6 would be the ideal position for them to finish for us based on odds vs. what the likely pick would be, so unlike Ed O i would prefer it if they won at least a few more games. i would rather have better odds at #5-7 than hope for #4, which best case is still only a 32% chance for us to end up with.

As of right now we have the #4 and #9 pick! I know the lottery could mess shit up, but we might be getting a couple studs this summer!

The order never stays the same so I don't really know if it's better if the Nets are 5th or 2nd. Shit never holds true to form.

Just gonna have to watch the draft lottery play out

Nets down 14 in the 4th. Deron and Avery both ejected for bitching at the refs. hah

This is not good. NJ needs to get its act together. It's not as if they're tanking either, because they look like they're actually trying to win.
