You can't. Expect the haters to come out now, and more Bowie talk on ESPN and Cowherd and all that. I'm not looking forward to it.
Stat of the week will be the one oldmangrouch posted elsewhere comparing number of games played through 3 seasons for Oden and Bowie. Hint: Bowie played about 40 MORE through 3 seasons...
When can we ever have confidence in Greg again? We will always wonder "is THIS the game he goes down?" I was JUST gettting over this!!!! Yesterday morning, when he was listed as a "Game Time Decision" with his ankle I thought "I can live with this - Greg misses a couple games a year with a tweaked ankle". Now this . . . uggggg. I feel bad for him, but I feel just us bad for Blazer fans. He doesn't deserve this? Neither do we. We have the richest owner in pro-sports, who if we were in MLB would buy championships like the Steinbrenner's, but he can't. If this were the Yankees and Texeira went down, they'd find a way to go get Morneau, or Miguel Cabrera. How do you even begin to replace your franchise center when you good enough w/o him to win 45+ games on a bad year and have no chance at the lottery? Free Agency? Not with Brandon and Lamarcus' contracts now. Joel Pryzz is our Franchise Center now, so I guess we better go get our back up a back up. Say goodbye to any hope of a title run.
Funny you say that - I had the same thought this morning. I barely slept, maybe 3 hours. When I woke up I thought "did last night really happen?" It didn't seem real.
I woke and and what happened last night crept into my brain. This is my team but it doesn't feel the same. Seeing Greg hurt again took a lot of wind out of the sails. At least for this year.
I'm all for schadenfreude, but this situation is just too brutal. Best of luck to Oden. I hope he comes back next year and picks up where he left off.
I assumed that's the only thing it could have been. No twisting, no impact, nothing else made sense... There was plenty of red flag-raising injury history with Oden prior to being drafted. I was still in the "you have to pick Oden" camp, however.
Feel like shit this morning. Looking for a silver lining...maybe we at least get him on a cheap extension this offseason, because of the injury?
Yeah, but that's misleading in terms of its implication. Oden has suffered more serious short-term injuries, Bowie suffered more serious long-term injuries. Oden has missed full seasons, but to injuries that one can recover from fully. Bowie was able to return faster, but the injuries altered his ability. While the superficial parallels are easy and obvious, Oden really doesn't resemble Bowie.
I still don't fault the Blazers for drafting Oden. Same as I don't blame them for drafting Bowie in '84. Trying to fill a need. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that both players with knee problems in college continued to have knee problems in the pros. EDIT: Brain fart by me. Sorry.
Before anyone else points it out, I'd like to state the following in a calm and rationale voice: Bowie and Oden did not have knee problems in college. Thanks! Bowie had broken BONES in college (I think he missed 2 years). Greg had an injured wrist in college.
Schadenfreude only applies when bad things happen to bad people. GO is a stand up guy. This is a guy whose first reaction to his knee injuries were the same, "I'm sorry." He doesn't feel bad for himself; he feels bad for letting down the team.
Bowie was "trying to fill a need." Oden was generally considered the most talented prospect in the draft, almost unanimous scouting opinion that Oden was a once-a-generation center prospect. Oden didn't have a knee problem in college. Other than that, yeah, spooky!
