Yeah, that is why they should have dealt Leonard to New Orleans and kept Withey....Defense is what POR needs from thier Center.....not a guy chucking 3's in practice or in the game....

Fortunately, our actual center is Robin Lopez; Leonard is only a backup. Having a backup C who can shoot might actual be useful.

    Concerns:
    1) Our "Actual Center" might get injured.
    2) Our "Actual Center" has a history of injury problems.
    3) Even though he was healthy last year he did not even then play starter's minutes.

I wouldn't say I'm worried, but I (and presumably others) are a bit nervous. That being said, if some sort of disaster occurs I'm sure Olshey will take appropriate action.

My only concern is defense. We pretty much all agree that Aldridge isn't really a help defender. He's fine guarding his man one on one; but he doesn't do much for the "protecting the paint". Also, Aldridge is our most clutch performer on the low block, so offensively, I would rather have him work there.

If we somehow were able to get a "Dalembert" type player that can give you a 18 per 10-15 minutes, I am perfectly happy. It would still give Leonard 10-15 minutes of development

Gorgui Dieng is looking really disappointing for Minny right now. Quick - offer them Meyers Leonard!

    1) The same could be said about any position. I wouldn't be happy with any of our backups being starters (except for Dorell Wright).
    2) Lopez has gone without injury for the past two seasons. He has a more prolonged history of health than of injury. Lopez has played more than 82% of available games in his 5 years, and just 4 fewer games than Nic Batum over the same timeframe.
    3) He was playing in front of/alongside Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson. It's impressive that he got as many minutes as he did. That said, he started every game, and played just 3 fewer mpg than Hickson did last year.

I'm quite comfortable with our center situation, but I would like a veteran third center brought in for mentoring purposes--a 7-foot Earl Watson, so to speak...

I actually think LA is our backup five. We'll play him with Robinson. Just a guess, however.

Wow - John Henson has skinny legs.

Dominique Jones is like Shabazz Muhammad was supposed to be. Plus he looks like Reggie Evans' mini-me.

Nate Wolters perpetually looks like he's been up for 50 straight hours.

Ish Smith is a blur. He might get to start in Milwaukee.

We've won every half that Victor Claver has played in, so if he plays and we win that could be the reason. OTOH, it could just be you!

And, keep in mind that not all the games Lopez "missed" were due to injury. Early in his career, Phoenix was stacked with veteran front court players, like Shaq, Amar'e and Boris Diaw. So, like any 20-year old rookie playing behind a bunch of veterans, there were some DNP-CDs in there.

The most encouraging thing is not only have his minutes gone up, but so has his overall production. Many players (perhaps most) see a dip in per minute production when they move from a back-up getting 10 - 15 minutes a game to a starter getting 25 - 30. Not so for Lopez. Last season he started all 82 games, played more than twice as many minutes as any previous year, AND had his best year. That's an encouraging sign.

    Jonas V. is a monster!

In terms of potential I think he's on par with Drummond.

    How can you tell?

I keep getting told it takes time for a center to develop and to be patient

Drummond vs. Valanciunas would be great to watch. Both of them might foul out even of Summer League.

Leonard should be forced to watch JV play on a tape loop. ML has, if anything, a more impressive build and is definitely more athletic, but JV is just a thug. (He also has very sturdy legs, which probably helps.) What he clearly has over Drummond is (a) attitude and (b) offense. But he'll never be close to Drummond's defensive potential.
