The reason why the magic suck despite all their youth, talent and athleticism is actually pretty simple. They don't have a go to scorer that can take over a game, and they don't have low post defense. Every player on that team is a role player to some degree on a contender.

And yes, sign me up for Tobias Harris.

CJ has youth on his side, Melo is arguably the most versatile scorer in the NBA.

I wrote a little about this over at BlazersEdge HERE - but there's a couple caveats to this.

    1. Nate your point about salary and absorbing his deal
While that's true there are other teams out there that could do that as well. I'm assuming MIL is chumming the water to see if they can garner a bidding war for his services. The leverage, however isn't as strong in MIL favor b/c Monroe has that opt out clause. It's a little more complicated than the usual "let's see what we can get" type idea that floats around

    2. Ties back to the original point- but b/c the cap space is going up so much it renders cap space by itself a little less valuable. It's the combination of both cap space and assets - that will be the draw of FAs come the end of the year.

Like I said in the BE piece... if it's a Godfather like offer, yeah, you listen. Otherwise? Nah. Not my cup of tea.

We should trade Leonard, Henderson, and Kaman to Milwaukee for Monroe and Antetokounmpo

Al Jefferson is being nice. Big Al has one of the most complete post games in the league- Monroe, while not bad on that end is nowhere near that level of proficiency. He's a decent passer, and a decent rebounder... I just don't see how he merits that kind of $$$. Then again I was talking about Crabbe being worth 12-15 a few weeks ago... so who knows at this point.

It's a weird roster for sure and they'll have to trade some pieces. I don't know why they drafted hezonja, thought willie Cauley-Stein was a much better fit for them. Their coaching choices have been pretty poor as well with vaughn and now skiles. That's on hennigan.

I'd take was... I mean I guess you could try to argue that he is, but I wouldn't buy it. Higher usage than CJ but scores less than 1 ppg more.

CJ on the other hand is one of the most versatile scorers in the league. If not for his below average inside production I would argue that he is the best. He's young though, so he has time to improve in that regard. Melo isn't going anywhere but down at this point in his career.

If this were 3 years ago, I'd be all for Melo for CJ. Melo has the 3, midrange, post and ISO game. CJ is great combo guard, but he doesn't have the offensive prowess Melo does.

What happened to Jabari Parker? Wasn't he supposed to be a star?

He tore his ACL his rookie year, it's been a rough ride for him so far.

Injuries. He missed a huge chunk of the first half of the season.

I would love Melo on our team. So many people diss him that he is actually underrated in my opinion. I want to keep CJ but if I was forced to trade CJ, I would definitely chose Melo. Remember- Melo went to WCF in 2009. He won in college too. Totally underrated nowadays.

Melo was 5th on that WCF Nuggets team in VORP, 5th in WS, 7th in WS/48, 8th in BPM--basically, that team was made by the supporting cast. Aside from that team, the only playoff series 'Melo has ever won was 2013 Knicks over the Celtics in the first round. That was basically 'Melo at the height of his powers: the highest USG% and PER of his career. He's moving downward at this point, and he's nowhere near as good as he thinks he is.

Melo is coo, but other than one great year in 2009 he hasn't done anything in the nba. hes just a reg season king then the season ends with nothing to show for it.

Melo IMO probably has had one of the those most underwhelming careers for a player with his type of hype. I think hes been out the 1st round only 2 times?? in about 13 years hes been in the NBA.. thats pathetic

No coaching stability since Van Gundy left....Skyles will grate on the young guys in another season..not exactly a players coach

The Magic are on a big skid.

    Golden opportunity to poach Vucevic.

You're going to judge his footwork based upon a contested fadeaway high post jumper? It's a fade away. From the high post. It's late in the shot clock too...

    Learn the game then post.
