The usual off-season refrain of fading veterans:
I see Delonte West will be playing with the Clippers in the summer league. Doc knows what a tough time he has and wants to see him get another chance.
I think the Blazers need a combo guard, not a pass-first, pass-last, pass-always PG like Sly who plays good defense. They need a guy who can create his own offense and by doing that create opportunities for the other guys on the second unit, plus be able to take some of the workload off Dame. Otherwise, the second team is going to struggle to score even worse than the last two years, and that could be disastrous. As much as Mo Williams drove me crazy, this roster, as currently comprised, needs a Mo Williams type of guy. I think CJ eventually can be that kind of player, and even an upgrade because he has better shot selection, but I don't want to bet the farm on his ability to fill that role this season based on what I've seen so far. And although Barton might want to play point, I don't think he's a 1-2. He's more of a 2-3. His decision-making sometimes makes Mo look like Andre Miller, too.
Brad Turner: The Clippers and free-agent guard Jordan Farmar agree to deal, sources, likely for biannual of 2 years, $4.2 million
Those cost a lot of money, because that's what everyone wants. For a cheap backup, you have to be willing to give up something. For example, Blake can handle and pass and shoot the three, but he can't play defense. Even Shaun Livingston, who can handle, pass and defend but can't shoot the three got the full MLE. There's no way you can get a complete point guard for just the MLE or BAE.
I suppose that's fair, though his numbers are largely trending the wrong way in terms of three-point shooting and assist rate. I'd be a little concerned that his decline will continue and he won't give particularly good three point shooting or play-making, but I could see it working out.
As you said, those cost a lot. Weigh the bad with the good and go for the best bargain. Hinrich was willing to sign the MLE with Chicago. He may be willing to do that with our team or maybe the BAE if we are lucky.
I would rather have a PG who could attack the basket over one who is better suited hanging out on the perimeter and shooting threes. Our offense is best when Lillard is attacking. We could use one more (at least) who could do that.
No one in mind. Maybe Sessions. Maybe someone from summer league. I just don't want to limit our search to 3 pt shooters. I think we need someone quick who can attack the basket, draw the defenders to him and dish off to our bigs or open shooters. We have a need for that type of guard.
