Well, since it's anonymously posted on reddit, and has sketchy sentence and grammar ... who am I to judge? I guess I'll take that at face value, since it may line up with someone's worldview.
donkiez Out of curiosity, what has your professional career as a worker looked like so far in your life?
I feel like I'm being set up for something here but oh well. I'm a mid 35 year old corporate sell out. Been working in the tech industry for the same company since I was 22, when I was hired as a work study employee and finished my degree which my company paid for at 23. Pay is great, benefits kick ass, bonus every quarter, and my company treats us well with a work life balance that is part of our core values, we also have perks like a gym on site pool tables in the break rooms etc. Point is that I have a great job and I have been very insulated from the health care issues, school loans, bad economy and other general social problems. I'm an entrepreneur at heart though and over the years I have owned and operated a few business on the side, including real estate investing, property management, and food carts. All of which were moderately successful but not enough to make me quit my day job. I almost quit to go full on with food carts at one point but was stopped by health care, I have some health issues and can't afford to not have health care, I still wonder what if on that one. Before all that and between high school and college I was an international bum living in New Zealand, Australia, and Tokyo, while spending considerable time in SE Asia. I worked a range of jobs from door to door salesman and apple picker in New Zealand to strip club and night club bartender in Tokyo (at the age of 19 like a pimp). I've been all over the world and traveling is my passion, which is were I formulated most of my "radical" liberal point of views and I've seen other countries take care of their citizens health care and education, which I view as an investment in the future. For instance in New Zealand health care is almost free and you actually get paid to go to school, all be it a very meager sum but for an 18 year old its enough to live on. I believe the American system of astronomical school debt and heath care is detrimental to entrepreneurship, as it ties you to a company for fear of getting hurt and/or not being able to pay back your house payment of a school loan which can't even go away with bankruptcy. Many heads of a family simply can not take the risk with their children or wife's health, of not having insurance to take the time necessary to build a successful business. So thats me in a nut shell. I do strive to keep an open mind and see other peoples points of view as much as I can though which is why I like engaging in the occasional conversation here.
Okay, I'll be the a-hole here. Why should I be grateful that I'm paying to help raise this woman's kids? If she can't afford to raise kids without government assistance, perhaps she shouldn't have had them in the first place.
I'm pro choice until the baby can be viable outside the womb. I am against public funding for birth control.
I don't support eugenics at all. Here's a crazy idea. If someone doesn't want to have kids, buy a jimmy hat or don't fuck. If someone cares about birth control for all, start a charity and distribute it. Why does the government have to do everything?
Because it isn't as simple as you say. If you don't want kids, don't fuck, isn't reality. And it seems that what you think is fair, let them live a hard life because of their mistake seems to harsh to many. If the gov't can help to reduce teen pregnancy, the whole country benefits.
Yep. I'm in the minority. Of course, getting pregnant and having to live with that responsibility can help two people to grow up. Teen pregnancy is none of the Government's business.
I like Maxie's position, but I am ready to break from the moral conservatives position. Very difficult to do too, since the idea of abortion is completely repugnant to me. Basically I would severely restrict any aid to single moms and their children and I would have the Federal government Pay for all abortions for any one that applies and require it for any woman that already is receiving aid. As repugnant as abortion is, no woman alone should be required to raise children she does not want nor has the resources to provide for their care. We have more than enough feral children in this country and what the hell, they grow up to be Democrats anyway.
which is why the states that take more from the government than they give are almost exclusively red states, right?
I can't make the relevant connection you suggest. Like Alaska receives way more federal money than it send because it has nearly the lowest population of any state and right close to the top in receiving military spending per capita. It is difficult for me to relate what I posted to what you posted but maybe you can help?
You're making a crack that democrat kids (or democrats period) are taking more money from the government. the "feral" children crack (which, unless you're an actual loser and not just one on TV) seems to be a comment about young or poor children needing the government teet in their lives (as adults). So it's funny that the states that rely most on the government are the states that are the most conservative and non liberal/democrat.
Published: July 19, 2011 State-by-State Welfare Assistance http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/01/25/us/20090126-welfare-table.html?_r=0 try again, here is a state by state chart that also shows an increase or decrease. A lot of the "red" states are on a downward trend..oh, and the more recent figures once again are higher in the blue states than these reflect.
hey, Ithought thecrack about feral kids growing up to be dems was kinda funny, and Iread no mention of the government teat..unlessyou are alligning democrat with mooch? I dont know if I would go that far..
And like a well-oiled machine, the powers-that-be keep the lower classes squabbling over pennies and fighting with each other rather than seeing that they have a common enemy. $25B!?! That's what we're talking about taking away peoples rights over? For fucks sake! The amount of corporate welfare that's being given away to the very richest of the rich makes the amount we spend on social welfare look like a dollar bill that's been used to pick up dog shit. As for the OP, the only part that sounds at all reasonable is limiting what food stamps can be spent on. But I certainly wouldn't limit it to just rice & cheese. The entire produce section would be fair game. Actual milk, or non-dairy substitutes. Non-processed meat (no Jimmy Dean, but yes to the butcher's counter).
