about OSU/WSU possibly going to the Big-12: from what I read i terms of rumors, the Big-12 knew for sure that their media partners in the new deal the Big-12 had secured, had no interest, at all, in adding the two schools. Further, they would not add any more money to the media deal. So for the existing schools in the Big-12, the 1/16th share of the revenue would have been reduced to a 1/18th share. Or a 1/17th share if OSU/WSU got half shares.

the Big-12, and their media partners were eager to add the TV markets of Denver, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and Tuscon. Not so eager for Corvallis & Pullman

I also 'heard' that the Big-12 schools had no interest collectively in taking on the travel burdens involved in getting to Corvallis and Pullman, especially in the winter

I don't believe the Big-12 was ever an option

Nah I think it was more of Beaver fans actually blaming OTHER schools for what happened to them. Their damn athletic director and coaches all did. It’s embarrassing. Sucks, but let’s not spin why/how it happened. And I have that one amendment of free speech behind me, so I can say whatever I want.

From what I heard it was much more the bolded part than anything else and the 'media partners' were used as more of a scapegoat. The reason being both WSU and OSU are not the 'Pullman' or 'Corvallis' markets at all and their TV ratings reflected that. Both schools routinely outdraw a good chunk of the B12 teams when it comes to eyeballs and that's really all the TV people should care about. That's why that argument doesn't make any sense and never has. Either the TV execs were complete morons, incompetent or just used to deflect the criticism away from the B12. From what I heard it was much more than bringing on Colorado, Utah and the AZ schools made a ton of sense travel wise and schools just didn't want to deal with the travel of getting to Pullman/Corvallis. That's the only logical explanation for it and what stings is the one thing that makes those campuses unique (especially WSU) is the one thing that ended up dooming them to 2nd tier status.

I can't speak on OSU but I know from reading multiple sources that WSU tried to get into the B12, but they weren't going to budge. Is it because they acted too late? Maybe but from what I remember there wasn't much they could do and OSU wasn't going to be able to get them to move on the two either. It really does suck right now and moving forward but soon more schools will feel that sting and there will be more consolidation. I just wish the SEC and B10 would get on with it and give the middle of the road teams something to play for because it isn't the CFP.

Straight up, the college experience at Corvallis can't be beat. I'm sure WSU is similar. Going to a college that has a town thats big enough to not be a college town is lame. Especially some place like UW in Seattle. Or PSU in Portland. It just is not the same.

Hey if you look reeeeeeaaaaaaaalllllll close thru the window, you can see some of the chaos and riots in our streets. Somebody was walking across the street with a fresh gyro from the Mad Greek Deli and dropped it! Luckily made it home safe.

I’m quite sure that’s debatable with every experience being different of course. My daughter is in SF and absolutely LOVES it. One of her best friends is in NYC and loves it… where as her other two friends are in Spokane and Colorado Springs and are board to death. I wouldn’t consider that a checkable fact.

Daughter almost went to Western Washington up in Bellingham. We went on a visit and it was absolutely beautiful. She just felt the town was too small and the school was too big. They have like 26,000 students and the University of SF has like 9,000. Wanted a smaller school/bigger city vibe.

Everyone is different I guess. I just know I loved it in Corvallis and most of my friends that went to PSU, UW and the like all hated it. Have some friends that went to Western and they think it was whatever. I know some people that went to UO and liked it. Idk, I just loved the college town feel. Corvallis also had people that were way nicer than the PDX area. When I moved back I was surprised how dickish people were here compared to Corvallis.

I honestly don't think I was bored once in Corvallis. There were beautiful babes everywhere. Tons of stuff to do too.

it wasn't "scapegoating" the media partners. That's a major factor. When the Big-10 added UofO/UofW, the media partners agreed at add 60-70M/year to the existing media rights deal:

    upload_2025-9-29_21-24-47.png
    upload_2025-9-29_21-25-14.png

because of that added revenue, while UofO/UofW will be getting a reduced share of the media split, they will be getting full shares of all conference revenue from the CFP money and the March Madness payouts. Besides the 1M raise each season there are supposedly some escalator clauses that will set the floor of the split for the two schools at 50%. That's important because the deal is back-loaded:

    upload_2025-9-29_21-33-15.png
    upload_2025-9-29_21-34-9.png

meaning that in 2028-29-30, Oregon's/Washington's share could be in the 40-50M range, and even more than that from the CFP and Marc Madness. And it's pretty certain that the Big-10 and the SEC will be hogging a lot of that CFP money

but with all of that good news for Oregon, I was told be someone who probably knows, that if FOX hadn't been willing to pony up an extra 450-480M, the Big-10 probably wouldn't have voted to add the two schools

    ************************************************************************

it was the same for the Big-12:

    upload_2025-9-29_21-41-41.png

    ******************************************************************************

in other words, if FOX/ESPN/CBS/NBC hadn't been willing to pay more for those 6 Pac-12 schools, OSU/WSU might not have been the only ones left on an island

but Big-12 media wasn't going to engage the pro-rata clause for OSU/WSU. You're right, there was just no way the Big-12 was a realistic destination

Hmm. Assumed you were in a small town guy. Some people just love big cities I guess. That’s me and my family. But trust me, we love vacationing in the quietest place possible.

Again this is where it doesn't make sense, WSU is the Seattle market, not Pullman/Spokane and Corvallis is the PDX market, not Corvallis, so those schools had to bring added value that schools like Arizona/ASU didn't as they get fewer eyeballs on their games, but what they do have is location and ease of access for most of the rest of the conference. Sorry man, the logic doesn't add up and from what I was told by a couple people I trust, the B12 didn't want the travel and that was the much bigger factor in the States not getting the invite.

Wouldn't trade my time in God's Country on the Palouse for anything and like you, we were very rarely bored between going to hanging out with friends, going to sporting events, out at the bars and making it to class from time to time as well. My thing with going to a school is a major city is that you will always have a chance to live in a big city like SF, but you'll never be able to have the true college experience in a college town. I tell my students, all things being equal, go to the school in the smaller town that is all about the school, where people can't get 'lost' in the city life. Move to the city after college when you're still young and starting out if you want but get the true college experience.

I loved Corvallis as well. Pullman is also a great college town.
