I have never seen any in Coos County or western Oregon for that matter. The only place I have seen them was in Union and Wallowa Counties in NE Oregon. But then, that was, 20+ years ago.
I do see quite few deer from the boat when cruising in land, no whitetail though. Yet! Come to think of it, I heard there are some on the lower Columbia. Perhaps we shall see.

Beautiful country, I have done a lot of hunting, kayaking, rafting, and camping in NE Oregon.

Strongly considered moving there when I retired. Decided on Idaho, with much lower taxes and cost of living.

I worked my ranch there for seven years. Then decided it was time to build the MarAzul. I had good timber on the ranch, but I had a chance to get some better, Port Orford Cedar and escape the
cold winters and super hot summers. Damn! I am glad I did.

There is a very small heard of whitetails around Cathlamet and on the island.

They have been there forever. They are a rare variety of whitetail, and highly protected. Don't shoot any.

They are what they eat....when I hunted we put out molasses, salt blocks and mineral blocks for the deer...the other trick is to take them at dawn near a watering hole...they are not nervous then and the water cools their system...worst tasting game is game that's chased and is afraid ...the best harvest is with a bow, not a gun....no adrenaline pumping through the meat

Ha! Ok. That will not be too hard. Perhaps 30 years since I ate any deer.
Yes, in those Islands just west of Cathlamet was where I was thinking they were.

Funny you mention the cold winters and hot summers.

I'm at 3,000', the place everyone wants to be when it is hot in the summer in the valleys. But I also like the winters here.

For two years, I spent 2 weeks of the month at my home in Vancouver, and the other two weeks here in Idaho. So I had a very good comparison of the weather, and what I was getting into.

In the winter, of course in was colder in Idaho than Vancouver. But, it felt warmer. The air is much dryer in Idaho. I hated those wet just above freezing winters in Vancouver.

Yes, I know what you mean. Dripping wet, above freezing but less than 40 degrees is Cold! Cold and dry is much more tolerable.
But... those big minus numbers can change your mind. 30 , 40 minus below is cold man. All kinds of trouble with that stuff.
Wife had a Mazda RX7. Damn thing would never run again until spring once the temp hit minus territory. She loved the thing but finally dumped it after two winters I think. Maybe it took three.
I tried to fix it for her but, it ain't going to work.

Understand about the very cold winters. It gets that cold a few miles from here.

The temp does not go below zero very often where I live. Most winter days start in the teens, and then warms up. Often warm enough to melt snow. Not all of it, but enough to keep the roads dry and safe most of the time.

I can't go shooting anymore. I toddle about 50 feet with the help of my wife's arm and I'm pretty much out of it. Gotta sit down or fall down. Deer hunting days as well as nearly all fishing are behind me. No more camping, either. Life sucks if you let it. I refuse to let it. Love my blazers. Had throat cancer that now restricts my shouting. At least, I think it was the throat cancer.

It hit 29 below one winter when I was in St. Louis. 110+ was not atypical in the summer. Kind of a hell hole in many ways. Great restaurants, though.

Driven through Wallace many times. Wallace is directly north of me, so the country is similar.

I've never seen mountains and country like that before. Spell binding.

We should lock up our cold winters and hot summers in boxes.

    Why?
According Al Gore, you will be underwater soon. While I'm sitting on future ocean front property.
