Getting real IF the Mavs don't make the playoffs--and that looked like a MINIMUM of five lost games by Dirk--here is how things change. The Mavs retain their pick this year. It is lottery protected The Nets would have the Mavs' UNPROTECTED first round pick in 2009 (which is supposed to be a better draft) and the Mavs' UNPROTECTED first round pick in 2011. Jason Kidd will be 38 at the time of the 2011 draft. In terms of trade value, an unprotected pick in 2009 may be more valuable to a rebuilding team than a protected pick in 2008...a team like the Clippers for example.
well i would want them to make the playoffs with the 8th seed, if not id gladly take an 09 pick and pray they fall apart
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Dumpy @ Mar 23 2008, 03:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Well, they are unlikely to miss the playoffs, but their pick could certainly be in the #20-#22 range. As a Net fan, I'd be quite happy with the #11, #22, and #41 picks. Best-case scenario is probably #9, #20, and #39. [If Dallas DOES miss the playoffs, then the Nets get unprotected picks in 2009 and 2011. Unless Dirk has a torn MCL, it's probably unlikely that the Mavs would miss the playoffs two years in a row.] There are a LOT of options with those picks. Not just in terms of what players to select in those slots, but they are valuable enough to combine or to combine with players. The Nets need to sit down and decide what the team should look like.</div> The Mavs may be rebuilding soon. Dirk is 30, Kidd is 35 (today), Dampier is 33, Terry is 30, Stackhouse is 33. Only four Mavs will be under 30 at season's end: Josh Howard (28), Antoine Wright (24), Jose Barea (23), and Brandon Bass (22). As Donnie Nelson said at the signing of Devin Harris, Harris, Diop, Ager and Howard represent the "future cornerstone of the franchise". Uh oh.
Not happy in Dallas, in fact, it is very ugly... http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/20...kes-dallas.html Unofficial word is that he is out two weeks...but that is unofficial.
well stated ^ .... nelson is a great coach... who could we replace frank with, some one with greater knowledge of the game than frank, and better use of personnell than frank, oh i got it... ANYBODY but frank

The only bright spot was Harris Diop and Howard all young players who came up in big moments but the Mavs trade for Jason Kidd will go down as one of their worst moves since not resigning Steve Nash. The Mavs will soon realize their problem is Dirk and by the time they try to move him they will not be able to get any value for him. I said this after the trade and will say it come playoff time. The Mavs just bought their own tombstone with the Kidd trade. The Lakers will only get better and are still young. The Jazz are mental tougher than the Mavs. As someone said I can see Jason turning in to Gary Payton a veteran PG going from team to team trying to search for that ring.

This all starts with the way Avery is designing his offense. He's trying to make Kidd a shooter, which he clearly isn't and never will be. Basically, a guy like Terry thrives with the offense while Kidd doesn't. I understand that it is late in the season, but Avery needs to experiment more, or else it'll only get worse come playoff time.

Starting with losing to the Heat in the finals, and then getting swept out last year in the first round...if they miss it this year (due to the injury and the overall ridiculousness of the West), I can't imagine Cuban will stand pat this offseason.

Is it just me, or is the way Avery's treating Kidd similar to the way Phil Jackson treated The Glove? Possibly the biggest game of the week (or season) could be Thursday at Denver. Who ever wins will have the tie breaker for the season. Dallas is up 2 games and that would give them an extra whole game, which they could very well need. I want them to get that 8th seed because I don't see them finishing worse than 8th next season. Even if the pick is unprotected in 2009 I don't think most teams would view it as too valuable because it's Dallas' pick.
