    It’s not as egregious as what Kidd did, not close. but of you want to argue it is unsportsmanlike you wouldn’t be wrong. The league can try to argue a slippery slope here with other pranks and decide to nip this in the bud with a fine. I’m not sure it really deserves that kind of attention, but the league office and I often seem to have a different sense of humor.

    One happened before a game, when nobody could get hurt.

    The other happened during a game, when someone could have been hurt.

    There's no similarity other than that they were pranks.

    He's making a judgment about what is acceptable and what is not when it comes to pranks, and way overplaying any risk of injury. If Smith wanted to injure someone, he'd do it via a hard foul or throw a punch or some other outright dirty play.

    I personally see it as a harmless prank, but I don't find it to be all that funny. It makes Smith look like an odd bird.

    Off the court, coaches have certainly been fined for unsportsmanlike activities, like talking shit about the refs.

    I don't care if it was sportsmanlike. I'm talking about the safety of when the prank was carried out. One could have directly led to a player hurting himself during a game, the other could not. Simple bright line. One was during an actual game and the other was before an All-Star game.

    I think you would have to find another example of a prank that occurred during a game and was not punished.

    Harmless pranks have never led to serious injury or death... like never... ever. If only all pranks, or crime for that matter, were judged only on the basis of the result. No dead body? No injury? Move along, nothing to see here. I still can't understand why that whole "pulling pistols on each other" by teammates of the team formerly known at the Washington Bullets was such a big deal.

    As someone who had that happen to them, it's not a laughing matter. I hit my head really hard on the chair when it was pulled out from under me by a friend.

    But, this is different because:

    A) They're on the same team

    B) Once again, not on the court. Not during play.

    You really don't see the difference?

    You are jumping to the incorrect conclusion that all pranks are unsportsmanlike. They are not.

    What Smith did was unsportsmanlike for two reasons:

    He was seeking to gain an unfair competitive advantage. Untying Marion's shoe could cause him to be distracted and not get a rebound on a missed FT. Or worse, his shoe could come off, which would negatively impact the quality of his play.

    He put another player at unnecessary risk of injury. I know you downplay this risk, but it is a risk and if you do shit like this repeatedly the odds will eventually catch up with you. So, the NBA is right to fine Smith to send the message to him and other players that putting other players at unnecessary risk of injury is unacceptable.

    The prank Jordan pulled was childish, the sort of thing most guys outgrow by sophomore year of high school, but not unsportsmanlike. It didn't not create a potential unfair competitive advantage and it did not put anyone at risk of injury.

    Do you honestly not see the differences in these two situations?
